31.07.2023 Fur balls.

 ~o~

Monday 31st 61F [9.00]  Overcast and breezy with showers. I keep having long, very strange dreams. Ultra detailed in ultra high definition. Each has its own story line but remain foolish just the same. Still no chest pain.

I may continue with the clearing and tidying. Boxes, with probable, charity donation material, have remained untouched for months. It can't go on like this. I'll have to pretend I have visitors coming more often. It seems to work for me psychologically. The visitors were very real. They just changed their plans as the day progressed.

I now find there is a clear parallel. In the restfulness of a newly empty floor space and a mowed lawn. There is less to offend the eye as it travels freely across the space available. I like the effect of having more bare floors. Previously I was clinging onto everything. Just to keep things unchanged. Perhaps half hoping they were just as they always were. As we slowly filled our small hovel with mere possessions. Until it could hold no more.

There was the constant desire to have a larger place to house and display our countless things. I would find another house advertised in our supposed price range. Then go off on a bout of search and record. Riding to the site. Taking pictures, listing details, studying every detail online. At least one visit was required to confirm the presence of a pig farm. Or an incessantly barking dog next door. Or even a demented farmer. Stacking every machinery possession against the boundary. Or, as happened so often, piling his hay bales so high and so close to the house for sale that it was perpetual night. These details and more: Aerial photography, maps, historical images, planning permissions, towering conifer plantations. All these were added to the sum of the parts.

Researching every new, low budget property became a hobby in itself. Though it was ultimately unfulfilling and finally unfulfilled. My wife would accuse me of latching onto anything and everything new. So another hope was dashed by hideous reality.

Nice, spacious houses by the sea. With nice, established gardens and no neighbours. Just weren't offered at rock bottom prices. Their asking price was actually what they were really worth. Very little indeed. Not unless the buyer had imagination, wealth and a tame, bulldozer driver.

As happened with the last, old farmhouse I researched and we visited several times. I repeatedly asked my wife if we should place a deposit. It wasn't to be. Hundreds of years of small farming were swept away. To build a wooden summer house near the sea. With a smart car to park outside. Only while in residence.

Somewhat ironically, I now find it quite pleasant. To come back to our much changed, newly isolated hovel in bright sunshine. It had everything we needed except common sense. Oh, and far too many neighbours from hell! Now all gone, thank god. Alas the damage cannot be undone. The vast hedges needed. To provide my wife with any sense of security or privacy, are now safely trimmed. She wouldn't recognize the place now. Neither inside nor out. She would be absolutely furious!

9.40. 64F. It has finally brightened up. With fast moving clumps of cloud. I'll try a short walk. Ouch! Just getting my light, cotton jacket on was agonizing. My left shoulder now requires special routines to dress normally. I have no idea why it hurts so much when flexed in particular ways. No particular memory of injury or undue stress springs to mind.

10.30 67F. I made it further today without pain or incident. My jacket was too warm in the sunshine despite the wind. Yesterday's dead polecat had changed. From being a gorgeous fur coat. To an oversized, damp rat. All in only one, very wet day. Which suggests that constant care of their fur is important. I can't put off shopping for much longer.

12.30 I risked a pre-lunch ride to the village shops. The sky was really threatening. With rolls, or pleats, stacked one upon each other. Black clouds above a below. It stayed dry on the way there despite the overhead darkness. Truly inky towards the north. Even the hint of a tornado forming underneath not far to the west. A sprinkle of raindrops on the way back. Though I returned still dry. Turbo mode hastes my journey when really called for. Still no chest pain.

20.45 61F. Yesterday I was very good and made a huge salad. So tonight I could be naughty or lazy. I chose naughty. Only slightly ameliorated by the fish content of the menu.

30.07.2023 Housekeeping? Me?

 ~o~

Sunday 30th 16C/61F.[8am] Heavy overcast and breezy. Risk of heavy showers with thunder. A patch of heavy rain passed just north of us. Occasional brightness. I'll risk a walk. It probably wont be far again. Still no chest pain.

Only a few hundred yards. The distant views were hazy. A furry animal lay dead, on its back, beside the road. Probably a polecat. It stayed dry and bright until I got back but the sky is darkening now. Though still with patches of blue. Moving quite quickly from the west.

I feel like a short ride. I could go shopping. Just to get away for a while. Though I really should tidy up instead.

Which I finally did. For hours. I have visitors coming later. I am using this to spur me on to making a real dent in the mess. Re-boxing and using clear, storage tubs, with lids. To allow much more efficient stacking. It had to be done. If I was to put a summer bed in that corner of the lounge. About which I had made zero progress until now.

It is always the same psychological problem. Handling things my wife had collected and stored over the years. Usually hidden away in excess furniture. Things I was never allowed to touch. Until now. Making irrevocable decisions about keeping things. Or donating them to the charity shops. Things I remember being our normal, everyday crockery many decades ago. Decorative glassware, which rarely saw the light of day. Waiting interminably for enough room to display it. That day never came. Not while she lived.

Should I get some display cabinets to show it off? If only to myself. I haven't made any progress on that front either. Building a shrine to her memory and affordable, good taste? I had plans once. They too have gathered dust. I have the space now. Provided they are all neatly housed against gathering more dust. Tall, all glass cabinets to let the light in. To show them off at their best. LEDs to make them sparkle after dark. It could be done. Given the will. IKEA have suitable all glass cabinets. Though new glass shelves are unavailable if one breaks. At least, according to one reviewer.

18.15 19C/67F.  I spent the day tidying, hoovering, dusting, mopping, washing, wiping and cleaning everything. Even moved furniture around. I can see several new options.

Now my visitors aren't coming. Not to worry. It finally got me motivated. To actually do something for a change. Instead of more escapism on the bike. Still no chest pain. Coincidence? Who knows?

19.00 I have salad to use up for dinner before it goes off. I bought some tinned tuna to go with it too. Having boiled potatoes would be sensible. Otherwise I shall have to throw away those remaining.

20.00 There was thunder and hail and heavy rain as I was cooking the potatoes. The salad ended up as a huge plate full. With barely room for it all. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I quite like the feel of the cleaner and  emptier hovel too.

29.07.2023 Nothing to see here.

 ~o~

Saturday 29th 18C/64F. Brighter start but now overcast and breezy. Possible scattered showers.

I had the nasty, upper chest pains for hours last night. Even after going to bed. I even have pain in my hands, wrists and forearms. Several medical websites say that pain is a known side effect. It also says that it takes a whole week to be rid of the relevant medication in the body. I am going to stop taking the tablets for a week. If the pain subsides then I'll ask for an alternative medication.

9.30  Just a short walk as the sky darkened. Heavy rain, with possible thunder, is heading straight for us.

11.00 Dead on the hour, the promised rain has arrived. In monsoon guise! Torrential, pissing down, stair rods or cloud burst? You pays your money and makes your choice.

The day was spent aimlessly on the computer. Looking up at intervals at the roar of the rain lashing down again.

I keep watching films and TV series about the loss of a loved one. An odd form of therapy but one which I find useful. Where sympathy and empathy for their on-screen, fictional struggles to cope. Can be measured against my own. How well am I doing in comparison? Does the exposure to my own, raw memories help me to heal? Do I need a dog, a cat or a goldfish? That sort of thing.

Too early to say but I am very unlikely to try and take it out on the innocent. The up-welling of memories is constant and often surprising. In its tiniest detail and utmost clarity. I have a bottomless pit of these memories to bring up into the light. Where the forgiving sun can warm them and then let them gently go.

Dinner was sardines on toast. It was really rather boring compared to mackerel in tomato sauce. I followed up with tomato soup and a roll, as usual.

It is nearly bedtime and I haven't had any chest or other pains today. Except for the left shoulder. Which is agony to move at times. I have no recollection of anything which might have triggered it. Is the lack of tablets so quick to reward me? Time will tell.

28.07.2023 Saddle hunt in the city.

 ~o~

Friday 28th 55F. Bright, but with large plates of thin, high cloud. My shoulders are aching but I feel the need for a ride today. I just have to decide on a suitable goal. Not too far away. I really ought to relax and savour the ride for its own sake. I do tend to try and keep up a high pace. When I could just enjoy the scenery.

Despite having an excellent camera on my mobile phone. It does not inspire me to do much landscape photography. The DSLR is far too bulky for easy access on a cycle. Since it must be so well protected. My secondhand, TZ7 replacement is throwing a wobbly and producing strange images at times.

7.15 58F. Time for a walk. Just a short walk. The farmers were spraying a recently harvested field.

14.15 74F. Returned from the city of Odense. 75km in 3h20m. Averaging only 22km/hr. I visited as many bike shops as possible. Curious to see the saddles which online reviewers had suggested. I was to be bitterly disappointed. Most of the bike shops now belong to national chains. Very few saddles were on display and all of them by the same make or models. If I want a different saddle it will have to be ordered online.

I almost turned back when I started getting upper chest pains again.    Then I discovered that inhaling deeply helped to rid me of pain. It took some time and repeated efforts but eventually I was free of pain. I was very little troubled by saddle soreness today. I wore my best bibs. While the frequent breaks, to look around the bike shops, must have helped.

I examined lots of bikes in the shops and in the long lines of parked bikes in the city centre streets. The vast majority of bikes had fat, vinyl saddles. A very few had a well-worn-in Brooks B66 Short. These saddles were all on several lady's bikes.

There were incredible curves on the leather of some of them. Yet re-tensioning them would probably have made them much less comfortable. Perhaps I just need to be more patient with my broad gauge, leather saddle? A Contec "Classic Exclusive."

It became steadily warmer and the wind picked up after lunch time. I had been wearing my windproof jacket but had to take it off. The wind

15.00 76F. Lunch well over. Time for a nap.turbines had all been stationary all morning. 20.30 66F. I have washed and brushed the e-bike. It was filthy. Then I greased the saddle with more Brooks Proofide. The black stain was wearing off to an unlikely hint of bronze in places.

This isn't supposed to happen! Brooks black is for life! The Proofide brought back the black. Though not quite as convincingly as a Brooks. I have numerous examples and models going back decades. They started turning as I rode home.

Have I bought a slightly cheaper, Chinese, Contec knock-off of the Brooks B67? It looked so like a Brooks at first glance. I was sure they had made it and re-badged it for Contec. Though it retails at below the price of the matching Brooks. So perhaps I should have been less naive. There are subtle differences between the two. Though their sizes are very similar.

In fact, now I have looked at the Brooks website the B67 has no leather join under the saddle. The Contec has a riveted joint in two flaps over a thin, steel plate. Which must demand a very much larger piece of leather. Albeit within the area usually cut away for the side skirts. Brooks uses perforations and laces in the side skirts if a saddle risks spreading under load. Though not on their B67. I punched holes and laced my B17 to avoid premature spreading on the trike.

Like the Contec, the Brooks B67 has a single rail for a standard [universal] seat post, saddle clamp. The Brooks B66 has twin rails and will only fit on a tubular seat post from the past. The Contec has stainless steel rivets. The Brooks uses chrome plated steel. I do have to say that the images on Brooks, superb website really are excellent: B67  [https://www.brooksengland.com/en_eu/b67.html]

Meanwhile, the Contec saddle is an absolute delight to look at. Effortlessly carrying off a handsome, muscular look from a bygone era. As stylishly firm in place, as one could possibly hope for. On my all black, Moustache FS27 '45' e-bike.

The flat top of the thick, black leather is as supple as the degree of tension being applied. I am deliberately allowing it to sag, very slightly, as it slowly breaks in. My very upright riding position, on the Moustache, demands a broad bench. Just to spread the loads. There is much less of the rider's weight [me] being shared by the handlebars.

My weight has crept up to a skinny 80kg. So there isn't much padding down below. After much research and looking around at alternatives I shall continue with the Contec. It even seems to be better made and designed than the Brooks B67. The Contec has a useful, hex socket head, tension bolt. Brooks persists in using a spanner alone. The chrome on the Brooks' standard rivets wears off and they rust. The Contec promises to remain unblemished.

Dinner was fish in batter and chips. Mini-oven ready after 25 minutes. The fish broke as I tried to tip it out of the baking tray and onto the plate. Nobody is perfect. It tasted better this time. I must remember to break the next one.

28.07.2023 Get off my mowin' grass!

 ~o~

Thursday 27th 15C/59F. [8.00am] Overcast and breezy. Scattered showers are promised. I am off for a walk.

9.00 Just a short walk. Returned just in time to avoid a shower.

12.00 67F. Sunny periods with showers. While I could conjure up the motivation I trimmed my beard and then mowed the grass. It was sweaty work in the sunshine. The grass. Not the beard. Mind you, the garden looks ten years younger.

Do you want to hear an industrial bakery joke? 😉 Well, Schulstad management was left in charge of the bakery. While the workers went on their annual holiday. The roll size varied in diameter by 2:1. The colour after baking went from light tan to burnt umber. The joke is that the managers still have a job! 😂It's the way I tell them. 😏

14.00 21C/71F Bright, sunny periods. Back to the mowing. It is even warmer now. The number of yards/meters covered in doing the drive soon adds up. 100m x a minimum of 8 tours. The centre and edges are grassed where the car tires don't run.

21.00 15C/61F Dinner was sausages, mashed potatoes, peas and grated carrots with Bisto gravy. Because of so much waste I am now using mini-packs of baby carrots. Which are too small to make rounds. So I decided to grate them to see if it worked. Probably not, because it lacked any real substance. Cutting the carrots into strips may be the best way to go. Or even long ovals might work.

26.07.2023 Paint that picket red!

 ~o~

Wednesday 26th 14C/57F. Bright start but very cloudy. Possible showers. Museum day. No walk.

Rode to the museum. Where I painted some more slats for building a picket fence. I was using a traditional paint in Swedish Red. I rode home for lunch and then back again. To help with installing original shelves and a meat safe in the brewing room off the old kitchen. Most of today's visitors were Dutch.

15.00. 18C/65F. Safely back after shopping on the way home. 32km total. A headwind coming home both times. The prop stand, fixing bolts came loose again. I shall have to use some blue Loctite on them.

My afternoon nap was doubled. I was having a long and stupid dream about being lost in a vast shopping mall. Then I opened my eyes and realised it wasn't morning. Because the blinds were still open.

Dinner was mushrooms and chicken with chips. 😋 I did the washing up while it cooked. Laundered a load of towels and hung them out.

25.07.2023 Dome revelation.

 ~o~

Tuesday 25th 15C/60F. Bright but breezy so far. Cloud expected with scattered showers. Up at 7.15 after late night [12.00] to compensate for long afternoon nap.

I am trying out the 10mm domes on my hearing aids. Everything seems much louder than with the 8mm. Better frequency response too. With lots more lower frequencies. Not sure about comfort so far. I don't usually notice the 8mm at all. The 10mm are much more obvious. I'll try a walk and see if I want to continue with the 10mm.

9.30 I didn't have a normal walk. I brought back the two wheely bins from the end of the drive. 480m. Then removed dead plants from the forefront of the garden. They had once been potted. Or housed in fruit boxes. Their heavy root balls being placed on the bare soil by myself. In some forlorn hope  of resurrection. They had finally succumbed to heat and drought. And my undivided inattention.

The modified hearing aids are a revelation. I can hear every detail including myself walking on carpet in carpet slippers. Such was the improvement that I suddenly felt profoundly deaf. When I removed them for my shower.

A modest ride, to see my friend, beckons. I had better make an effort. Time flies when one is a certified, old fart.

14.00 Safely returned home after a 53km, two way ride. A string and gusty headwind coming back. I stopped briefly as two cyclists passed me. They ignored my wave and then gave no hand signals at the T-junction. This was despite two cars waiting right behind them for an indication of their intended direction. So I blasted past them and left them in the dust. To chase me pointlessly for miles. 😎

Dinner was salad with boiled potatoes. I had no tuna to go with it, nor carrots, but it was still fine.

BTW: The 10mm hearing aid domes are great. I soon forgot that I was wearing them.

24.01.2023 A humongous fry-up!

 ~o~

Monday 24th 15C/60F. Overcast and windy. Possible showers. My chest is slightly bunged up with nasty tasting mucous. I have to keep clearing my throat. No shortness of breath. Up at 7 after sleeping well. I drank nothing alcoholic at the party. Nor at home afterwards.

Today I have to go into town to get some more hearing aid, silicone domes. I ran out completely yesterday [Sunday.] Before realising my stock was nil. Poor stock control. With everything thrown in together in a box.

I have noticed that pressing lightly on the parts of the hearing aids in my ears greatly increases the volume and bass. So I wonder if slightly larger domes would help. By increasing the degree of sealing with my ears. I'll try larger domes at the hearing aid dealers. Just to see if they do help before I restock.

I would like to go on my e-bike but might get drenched! Or, I can easily pretend it is winter. Wear my winter cycling rain jacket. I am very unlikely to overheat.

I didn't overheat on my walk. Slight pain in my chest and between my shoulder blades. My forearms started to hurt too. I deliberately walked briskly to try and get out of breath. It was difficult to believe the pain was directly related to effort or incline.  Have I overdone the cycling on top of the museum exertions? Or is it a side effect of the tablets? I still have no idea.

9.55 It seems to be brightening up. Though it is still overcast and windy. I'll ride to town on my e-bike.

14.10 Just finished lunch after returning from town. I obtained the spares for the hearing aids. They managed to get my phone to work through the right side hearing aid. Previously it was only heard on the left. Which ear is almost deaf. Now I can finally hear the conversation on my mobile phone without needing the phone's speaker.

After removing my jacket, I pottered around the big shed shops. Then rode back in sunshine with the wind behind me. The only pain was in my right hand. 31km.

Later I went for my usual 40 minute nap. It ended up as 2 hours and 15 minutes! Which probably means I shall struggle to sleep tonight.

Dinner was a foolish fry-up to deplete the fridge overburden. Brown mushrooms, chicken pieces and sausages. It took two frying pans and a good 20 minutes as I washed up. The egg looks weird, from being turned over, but was still perfectly runny. I  mopped up afterwards with a full corn, bread roll. 😋

23 Jul 2023

23.07.2023 A great indoor barby!

 ~o~

Sunday 23rd 14C/57F. Heavy overcast, windy, cool and wet. A long, rainy day is forecast. Which is a great shame. Because I have been invited to a normally outdoor, social event by the neighbours. Hopefully the hosts have adapted to the potentially dire weather and we can all congregate indoors.

I slept quite well and have not suffered from the "phantom" pains since yesterday morning. I plan to have an early walk in my winter rain jacket. Since I am very unlikely to overheat at these temperatures. There is a gap in the massive rain clouds if I go now.

8.30 Back from my walk. It stayed dry but very damp. Some pain arose between my shoulders but I kept going. My upper chest is slightly bunged up with mucous again. Only one car passed me while I was out. No progress on the earthworks for several days now. I need to go shopping if there is to be any lunch. [Or dinner!] Given the forecast it will have to be in the car.

14.00 15C/60F. Overcast, breezy and raining continuously. The rain might just clear for my social event. Lunch over. I went shopping and came back with lots of bargains on my regular groceries. Marmalade and butter were half price! The butter has gone in the freezer. Though I was only allowed six packs for the discounted price.

9.45 Returned from the get together. There were ten of us including the three teenage boys. Everybody was in good humour. As stories were related with full hand movements, squeaky voices and funny expressions.

Once I was back I dragged the two wheely dustbins along the drive for morning collection. Then ran back because it started raining hard. Only to discover a bag of rubbish waiting to go in one of the bins I had just delivered. Grr.

There is something wrong with my chest. I didn't get seriously out of breath but it hurt like hell when I was breathing deeply. Fortunately it soon passed off. If I was lacking oxygen uptake I would be panting from any slight exertion. In reality I can pedal fast. 100-110rpm. While applying considerable effort uphill on the e-bike. Without ever getting out of breath. So it must be muscular rather than functional.

Something is restricting my chest expansion. My rest heart rate is presently only about 60bpm. This is not long after returning indoors. After a brisk walk both ways, twice. The first time with two large and heavy wheely bins. 480m total? So I seriously doubt that my heart is involved in the pain.

I have noticed the pain tends to come on when I am walking uphill. I don't feel remotely breathless but am obviously breathing slightly more deeply. I tried four days without the pills. Which I initially blamed for the unexplained "phantom" pains. I was still getting the pains after that break. So I restarted the medication. I had better make another appointment with the quack.

 No dinner needed tonight.

22.07.2023 I am cured!

 ~o~

Saturday 22nd 58F.[14.5C at 7.30] Bright sunshine and breezy. The forecast is for scattered showers and some sunshine.

9.30 Returning from my usual walk to the lanes. Almost no birdsong except for skylarks. Cloud shadows crossed the fields. Chest pains, shoulder pains, back pains and even forearm, hand and wrist pains today as I walked.

Riding for hours, even with a comfortable riding position, may be taking its toll. The weird thing is that it doesn't feel like normal muscular pain from overexertion. Nor joint pain.

So far it's not a bad day for a ride. 😄

It did rain and heavily for a time, but today I did nothing but sit at the computer. Or watched TV. I'm calling it resting. Not fulfilling my part as an extra on the stage of live. Though I doubt anybody noticed. Not even taking another vital trip to the shops. For more groceries. Just to pad out the monotonous menu.

Dinner was chips and fish fingers. An effortless 11 on the scale of predictability. I just didn't fancy salad again. Toast was so yesterday. Literally.

I suffered no more pains for the rest of the day. That was too easy! I just have to do nothing all day.

21 Jul 2023

21.07.2023 86km.

 ~o~

Friday 21st 15C/60F. Bright sunshine but some, thin high cloud. Possible scattered showers. Woke to aches all over. As if I had been doing hard labour! I'll walk it off and then see how I feel about a ride.

I think this is a 1950s BMW Isetta. Many micro cars of this period were trikes but this has four wheels.

8.45 Despite the modest temperatures and the breeze I was too warm in my cotton jacket. Skylarks sang high overhead. Swallows raced around the ripening crops. While blackbirds greeted another day at various distances. Traffic was unusually light.

I need more shopping and plan a modest ride. To a village at the end of a delightful route with lots of small hills. There are two co-ops to choose from in two adjoining villages.

12.45 20C/68F. Lunch over after returning from a 34km ride around the various shopping villages. Including browsing in several charity shops for furniture. I wore my cycling cardigan over my racing jersey again because I was not warm enough.

18.00 65F. Returning from a visit to my British friend. Making 86km today. I wore my cycling jacket over the jersey this time. To ensure I stayed warm. It was quite breezy but at angle to my direction of travel.

I keep getting upper chest pain. It is really unpleasant. I remember it first started when I was panting up a long hill on my trike. Now the pain comes on at different times. Even when I am on my morning walk.

Dinner was cheese on toast with halved tomatoes. I actually remembered to take a photo. Enjoy?

20 Jul 2023

20.07.23 And don't call me a fossil!

 ~o~

Thursday 20th 60F. Bright but cloudy. Showers possible. Brightening later. I am aching all over.

8.00 Down to 21C/70F upstairs. I'd better have a walk before I get frostbite!

The new drive earthworks from about half way.

9.00 Only a short walk. Cool, cloud, breezy and sunshine. The back pain has gone. As has the big excavator. Though lots more work left to do. The big, road roller remains. Birds of prey circling in the distance. It is relatively clear today. Detail visible at eight miles in my binoculars.

Not sure what to do with today. I need grocery shopping. Machine washed laundry to rinse and spin again. More to do upstairs. Towels left suds in the rinsing water in the bath. More suds from the spin drier. Gone out on the rotary drier. To take its chances against the promised showers. A load of cycling clothing is taking a tour in the washing machine. The last of the laundry catch-up.

While that was happening I went through the jars of my wife's fossil and stone collection. I have separated the shells. The stones, and many more, all came from Her garden.

Possible stone tools and arrow heads on the right. Fossils in the middle. Then stones with holes. With pretty or interestingly shaped or coloured stones on the left. I have no idea where all the shells came from. Presumably from camping holidays in our youth.

Trivial? Not if you consider how little display space my wife had in our overcrowded home. She thought them important enough to have them in the window sill behind the kitchen sink. Where she could admire them. Probably for the warm memory of their individual discovery.

12.00 66F Mostly sunshine and breezy. All the laundry is dry but for the cycling clothes. Which, again, I put into a soak, rinse and spin cycle using the bath. The results have gone out on the airer. Where they will dry in no time. Cycling clothing is designed to be like that. The racing jerseys actually feel dry to the touch. Straight out of the washing machine and the spin drier.

I love their bright colours. All of them came from charity shops up to 12 years ago. Which speaks well for their longevity. The padded racing shorts and bibs were bought new over the years. Mostly from the budget end of the market.

12.30 67F. Shopping! Or there's no lunch!

13.45 20C/68F Lunch over. It rained just as I left the supermarket heavily laden. I was only wearing  T-shirt and shorts. Having emptied the pannier bags before leaving. I had no wet weather backup.

So I hovered for a minute while the shower passed. Before loading the bike with the shopping and putting it into Turbo mode. Then pedaling hard to get home before the next threatening shower. No matter how hard I tried I could not go over 34km/hr into the headwind. It stayed dry and mostly sunny after that. The last of my laundry is dry too.

8.00 14C/58F Dinner was fish in batter with boiled potatoes and peas. I cooked the fish longer this time. Though it didn't improve dramatically. It wasn't awful or even slightly distasteful. It just lacked flavour.

19.07.2023 No Internet!

 ~o~

Wednesday 19th Cloudy. No internet. No blog update. A short walk.

I was stabbed by a horse fly, on my leg,  as I readied myself. Blood everywhere and a huge swelling. Then I rode to the museum. Where I started by collecting trimmings from topiary hedge cutting. That was followed by painting. So quite a restful day but with plenty of light exercise. It rained at lunch time. So I continued painting [under cover] and then went home for the day. It was dry by then.

16.00 After a couple of calls to my ISP's Tech Support I finally got back online. No real explanation. I reset the fiber box but that didn't do it. A change of cable port did. Which is silly. Because it has worked in the original port for years. Why would they have four ports if only No1 worked?

Dinner was four poached eggs on toast. I checked the "Best before" date and it was ten days ago! So I used them up. Burp! 😋

18.07.2023 99km for a sweety jar.

 ~o~

Tuesday 18th 58F. Bright but cloudy. A cool summer's day according to the DMI. Westerly wind all day becoming steadily stronger. I ought to get a ride in this morning. A walk first to ease some aches and pains.

There were lots of birds in the wild part of the garden this morning. Blue tits were clinging to tall "weeds." Warblers and blackbirds sang and dashed for the trees.

8.00 Back from my walk to the lanes. It rained lightly at half way. Much worse further north. Where the scenery was masked by a white mist of heavier rain. Traffic was normal. Two, large birds of prey were bombing each other near the church. The earthworks continue to widen but no excavator activity so far today.

9.30. Sunny. Showered and ready to head north to the sea coast.

15.30 Returned from a 99km ride. I explored lots of lanes leading to the sea and running parallel with it. Not a great day for the weather. Cool and increasingly windy. I was being blown sideways every time I moved out of the wind shadow of hedges and buildings.

It was quite chilly and cloudy. So I wore my cycling cardigan over my racing jersey all day. Munching micro Corny bars and drinking apple juice at intervals helped to keep me going. 4 hours traveling time at 25km/hr average speed and 77rpm average cadence. A small helicopter was offering flights in Bogense.

16.00 Lunch over. I bought a small sweet jar for 10kr [£1] at a charity shop. For housing my wife's collection of fossils and shells. In a more compact and manageable form. She was always excited when she found something interesting and would bring it to show me. We would argue over the authenticity of specially shaped stones. She always hoped for easily recognizable stone age tools or weapons.

Dinner was salad. I had no Tuna, nor tomatoes so made poached eggs. None of the supermarkets had edible tomatoes. They were orange instead of red. Finding ripe, organic bananas is just as difficult. Greener than an apple most of the time.

17.07.2023 Taking stock. [Again!]

 ~o~

Monday 17th 15C/60F. Overcast and windy again. Rain or showers are expected all day and windy again. It is already raining. Heavily enough to be easily visible against the dark background of the garden trees.

Upstairs temperatures have remained stable at 23C/73F. Which I find comfortable for sitting at the computer. Sleeping under the empty duvet cover in a T-shirt has been fine too. Fortunately the record heat wave over southern Europe hasn't reached this far north.

With 1/3 of Americans under a hazardous heat warning nobody can still deny global warming. Heat, rainfall and flooding records are falling everywhere. China is breaking temperature records. As is Japan.

It is already far too late to hold the earth at the temperature levels of the empty promises by our so-called leaders. The oceans have run out of heat storage. Greenland ice and the mountain glaciers are vanishing. Even Antarctica is losing huge volumes of ice. When they originally though it was invulnerable.

7.00 Due to the risk of higher temperatures reaching here I have plans to get my heavy bed downstairs. I shall place the folding sponge mattress against the cupboard at the bottom of the stairs. That will avoid a catastrophic impact if I can't hold the weight of the bed base. Hitting the cabinet with a heavy bed would not be kind to the contents!

Emptying the tall cupboard/display cabinet with my wife's china cat and some of her teapot collection would be difficult. Not to mention time consuming. It doesn't look like it but there must be a hundred cats hidden in there. Many more carefully wrapped and boxed upstairs. The dangling cables are network cables to the upstairs router. I had to un-clip them to paint the chimney. The clips were never replaced.

Being brutally realistic, removal of the entire cabinet and its contents would be the most sensible option. If only to allow better access to the steep stairs. The cabinet has/had no other purpose and is made of very dark wood. Making the contents very difficult to see. It also makes that end of the L-shaped lounge very dark indeed.

The cabinet came from a huge flea market with occasional pretensions to antikism. Probably originally made in India and sold at dirt cheap, furniture stores. It had pretensions of grandeur when we found it. The drawers work very poorly and the hinges are broken on one door in the base. I haven't dusted it. Such activities are utterly meaningless in my present state of mind. Where almost everything is meaningless and apathy reigns uncontested.

I should really pack the entire collection in newspaper and box it up. Then I can be rid of yet another unwanted cupboard. Should I decide to display her collection in future. I can use modern, glass display cabinets in white. Probably from IKEA. Possibly with interior diode lighting. Or, the storage boxes can be added to all of the rest. Stored away, for some increasingly meaningless, future decision. For somebody else to make after my own demise. Or my being sentenced to death row in an old people's home.

As more time passes. Following my wife's sudden and unexpected death to cancer. The less hold her things have on me. Her absence still seems as completely unreal as was her presence to me now.
They say that time is the great healer. They must be right. Yet I am still kept awake by the countless memories of her. Dreams twisted into surreal nightmares. Still wake me up all the time.

The left, kitchen windowsill is still decorated in my wife's [now dusty] blue glass collection. The junk filled greenhouse lies beyond. The curtains which covered the greenhouse walls for decades are long gone. I ripped them down as soon as I was finally free to do so. They had already disintegrated from UV and the soaring heat of summer.

That was before we invested in horticultural quality shade netting. Alas too late for my wife to enjoy it. Both end doors were inaccessible due to her storage out there. It was impossible to take more than a few steps. With white tarpaulins hanging down from the ceiling to crouching height. The floor housed several bamboo garden suites which were never used.

Meanwhile, I find the connection to her most valued things ever more tenuous. Why am I keeping these things when they have no other meaning to me? Than Her ownership while she was here. They will not bring Her back. I have no need of such things to remind me of her. I think of her all the time. Though I was never allowed to touch her collection. Nor any of the overburden of furniture its storage demanded. There was so little room for anything to be put on display. Or even for us to move around the house.

Most of her excess furniture has gone. I donated huge quantities of her "stuff" to charity. Other items went to the recycling yard. Endless trailer loads. Getting rid of modestly valuable items to recoup their usually modest, initial cost is very hard work. There is no Danish eBay. The small ads websites are fixed price. There is no competitive upward bidding on prices. Most of her collection was bought over many years. From charity shops and flea markets. She had a good eye and there is very little real junk.

My wife's collection of shells, fossils and "interesting" stones. Which she found while gardening over decades. These decorated the right windowsill beyond the kitchen sink. The same window which was covered in a polythene tarpaulin for decades. Denying her a view of her front garden. Where she spent so much time. It also made the kitchen dark.

I had to move the collection to allow access to fight a recent ant invasion. It is temporarily laid it out for the photo on the hotplate. What does one do with such a collection? Find a big, glass, sweet jar with a lid? Mix it all together and store it away?

My wife never threw anything useful or pretty away. Not if it could be helped. She practiced recycling down to the smallest scale. Before anybody else thought much about it. Nothing useful ever went to waste. Usually it could be found a purpose in gardening. Or one of her other interests. Or mine.

The result was a house full of her "belongings." No matter how trivial. Which had suddenly and completely lost its purpose. My problem was making sense of it all. While slowly breaking the bond of deeply ingrained responsibility and attachment by association. While simultaneously suffering from the endless depression at her passing.

8.00 Heavy rain and thunder. I was going to go for a walk in my winter rain jacket.

9.30 56F. It is still raining heavily. Still rumbles of thunder. Which is why today's blog post is growing ever longer. It's now a battle between boredom, cabin fever and actually doing something useful. Whatever that means.

13.00 20C/68F Lunch over. I had a short walk in wind and sunshine. Just to see the progress on the drive earthworks. The big excavator was busy spreading soil ever wider near the road. The new build, planning permit for the field, is for a horse pasture. Raising the drive was not included. Nor can I find any reference to it on the council's website. Not that I care about that aspect of the work.

I just hope the very real, earth dam, they have built. To support the raised drive. Doesn't lead to flooding. There is a small hill or ridge rising to the east from the rear of my garden. Which must inevitably drain down into the now, fully enclosed, marshy field. Whether the newly formed plastic drainpipe is enough I shall soon find out.

My house is about a couple of meters above this sunken back field. So there is probably little risk of flooding.  Except on the field itself. Which may become a shallow lake after prolonged, heavy rain. Just as it did in the past. When we first moved here. The water table in winter is very high. As I know from the drainage excavations I dug by hand. To connect to the new, local sewage system.

After a long, lazy day doing nothing: Dinner was fish in batter with chips. Yet again I forgot to take any pictures. The fish was very disappointing. There was mention of cod on the packaging but there was no discernible taste.

16.07.2023 Windy and wet.

 ~o~

Sunday 16th 60F. Bright but cloudy with strong winds. Up at 5.00 after a restless night. Went to bed at midnight to try and ensure I slept.

9.00 19C/66F. Returned from my morning walk to the lanes. Almost no traffic. Unusual so, even for a Sunday. The trees are bending to the wind at intervals. The road was littered with small branches and leaves from yesterday's squally showers and cloudbursts. A 24m/s [53mph] gust was measured only a few km away. My pond has refilled a few inches of evaporative losses in only a few days. The collection area is very close to the full diameter. So there has been no amplification of the heavy rainfall.

The upstairs temperature has dropped to 23C/73F after having the windows on the catch all night. They have been like that for days and nights without affecting the temperature. So it's mostly about lower outside temperatures. Plus the southerly wind causing a cross-draught indoors. I need to go shopping but the strong wind will make a ride "interesting."

I decided to go in the car. There was lots to buy. I have spent two hours today on WhatsApp. Chatting to two different people. It has been very windy all day with heavy showers. One of which lasted for ages.

Dinner was chicken and mushrooms with pasta, peas and tinned tomatoes.

15.07.2023 Lawn? What lawn?

 ~o~

Saturday 15th 19C/67F [at 8.40] Bright start but windy with showers. Expected to peak at 27C/81F later.

8.40 Rain on the southerly windows. Up at 8am. I got up from 4-5am due to having intense memories of my wife. I wasn't really warm enough in a T-shirt, under a duvet cover, despite it being 24C/75F upstairs.

8.45 I was going for  walk but it is raining harder now.

I had a shortened walk. To confirm the neighbour's new [mega]drive is fully covered. In a firm layer of rubble, on the surface, from end to end. Presumably flattened by the road roller. I wasn't present to hear its deep rumble yesterday.

A remarkable feat considering the changes in level. From the raised road and right across the sunken marshy field. Countless giant, tipper trucks dumped their loads of subsoil and went away for more. There is now a gentle slope throughout the length of the new drive with considerable width. To allow easy access for large vehicles. Huge piles of gravel stand waiting. To be distributed once the leveling and landscaping work is completed.

12.00 26C/78F. I have just mowed the lawns and the drive. Instead of running away on some false errand. It was too hot in the sunshine! I had to splash my face and neck to cool off. The Bosch Rotak 37 battery mower is tired out. We had it for years. This one was our second after the first one wore out.

My wife always insisted on doing the mowing. Because I "couldn't keep a straight line!" As if anybody else would ever see our garden! Luckily the Rotak was light enough for her to use. A deliberate choice after struggling to start a petrol mower for years.

The deliberately "wild" part of the garden. Which was once in extremely deep shade. Two decades of bare earth. Hidden under the giant horse chestnut. Towering teasels, pretty pink mallow, rosebay willowherb, lupins and foxglove are all self-sown. The striking 3-D effect is rather lost in the image.

My wife always insisted on mowing at the lowest height setting. Which meant the blade was scraping along the ground most of the time and hitting stones. Two batteries were never enough for her to complete the task within a reasonable time period. They were always on charge. Being stored over the long winters in the freezing shed probably didn't help.

I regularly re-sharpened the blade and replaced it at intervals. I do not think it is worth paying for another new blade. The mower was only ever suitable for small lawns. It stalls if it is faced with taller or thicker grass.

Pretty sky just before 21.00. To the west it was a solid, dark grey smudge!

17.00 25C/76F Overcast but still warm. Countryside warning of a risk of thunderstorms. For this evening and overnight. Which is why I cut the grass. I should have gone shopping today, but didn't. 27C/80F upstairs. 30C/86F in the balcony room. The opposing dormer windows are open but here is no visible air movement in the trees.

I had better put the mower away before the rain starts. Well, that went well. The ants had moved into the mower. Just while it was standing out on the lawn for a couple of hours! I found a sharp stick and cleaned all the old layer of grass coating the inside of the base. That should help it to perform a bit better. Meanwhile it pretended to rain. It feels like an oven outside and in.

Massive rain just after 9.00! With hail, inky black sky. The temperature dropped to 15C/60F. The drive was bright with water from end to end. Short lived though. I have reopened the windows on their catches but it is stuck at 27C indoors.

The DMI radar is showing a massive, elongated weather system sliding NE past just to the west of my location. With huge numbers of lightning flashes being recorded. I can still hear distant thunder but the worst of the weather should miss me.

21.13. Or not! As huge black clouds with flashes are heading straight for me now. With fierce winds. It's now turned as dark as midnight in winter!  Constant lightning to the west and north. The northern sky is so dark I can hardly see the outlines of the garden trees.

Dinner was mackerel on toast. No imagination, but I wanted to save the mushrooms and chicken for tomorrow.

14.07.2023 91km and selling a kidney on eBay.

 ~o~

Friday 14th 11C/52F [at 6am] Bright with hardly any wind at the moment. 15C/60F at 7am. Possibility of isolated showers. It looks like a nice day for ride.

The guyed, Tommerup Mast [near Brylle] is 327m [1027'] high from the base. It can be seen over a wide area.

My new/old pine cupboard has a twisted door. Probably a warp from being brought indoors to warmer, drier air. I shall have to clamp it twisted the opposite way. To [hopefully] make it straight.

I now plan to have a high level, heat pump unit on the front wall of the kitchen. This can share warm air with the bathroom and entrance hall. As well as warming the kitchen of course. Whether it can warm the entire house. With the internal doors open. Is (cough) open to doubt.

The [rear] entrance door needs to be replaced. I made it myself. Probably 20 years ago. From heavy, tongued and grooved floorboard. It shrinks and expands all the time. Making sealing against the frame all but impossible. The door is low and wide and impossible to change. So I will have to order one made to measure.

Or make a new one myself. Sealing against drafts is the problem. I'd like to bring in some daylight to the hall. Preferably with a tall, narrow "arrow slit" window for security. The hall presently has to rely on borrowed light through the fully glazed, internal doors. Painting the hall white helped here.

7.30 Time for a walk.

8.45 18C/65F. Back from my walk and morning coffee over. Now I have to choose a goal for today's e-bike ride. There is a "discount" window manufacturer's showroom 42km/26 miles away. Where I might get some inspiration and free advice about a replacement entrance door.

A pleasant ride. With which I am mostly familiar. I shall avoid the city by swinging well south of it. Yet not adding much to the overall distance. Avoiding main roads as much as possible too. I rode the same way quite recently but went much too far into the city.

This time I [twice] passed though a major sand and gravel quarry area. With many lakes filling the landscape from earlier excavations. Here I stopped for lunch. Two bread rolls and an apple juice. While seated on a very uncomfortable memorial bench to a local personality.

I reached my goal and had a  nice chat with the lady salesperson. While I looked around at the doors and windows on display. Now I just have to sell a kidney on eBay and a new door can be mine.

15.30 22C/72F 91km/56 miles. Changed to the second battery when the first dropped to 25%. Average speed 25km/hr. 50% Tour and 49% Sport mode. With a little Turbo towards the end. As I grew tired on the local hills. I had used Tour mode a lot on the outward journey with a slanting tail wind.

Coming back was mostly into the wind. So Sport mode was far more useful. The various modes provide power assistance at a specified percentage of the rider's measured input. So speed and effort are directly related to the rider's strength and wind conditions. An e-bike is not even remotely an electric motorcycle. The ride back was a perfect example. Of a headwind and my becoming steadily more tired. I am usually pedaling hard even in Sport mode.

Had I stayed in Tour mode my average speed would have dropped drastically. The bike would need more and more of my own effort. As my remaining strength steadily reduced. I just wish that the range was at least double what it is in Sport mode. Carrying the spare battery usually gets me home with masses of reserve charge.

I should really be more trusting and stay in Sport mode for most of the time. For its [more] effortless speed. The problem is a very real fear. [Range anxiety!] That I will not get safely home on the second battery. The idea of having to ride such a heavy machine without power is daunting.

Sometimes, after a stop involving the removal of the Nyon head, I forget to set the Mode. Trying to pedal away from a standstill, without any power assistance, is an exercise in futility! The Nyon resets the power assistance to Off on removal. It is an added [premium] security measure against theft. Though I always lock the bike. Usually to something immovable with the hefty ABUS U-lock.

It is amusing to think back to my early training rides up and down in the drive. I was sticking strictly to Eco mode to avoid going too fast! Trying to turn in the width of the drive was hair raising in Tour mode. It felt too fierce and I'd go wide. The idea of using Sport or Turbo mode was beyond my wildest imagination. Now I see Sport mode as standard. With Tour only really useful with a tailwind or downhill.

Choosing Eco mode is like riding with two flat tires and no power at all. Probably with the brakes dragging as well. So I, quite literally, never use it. Tour mode demands more power from me than Sport. So it tires me more quickly. It becomes completely pointless to work so hard on a longer ride.

These mode choices are mostly to do with my demand for higher speeds. Which, quite naturally, reduce the time duration of my rides. Shorter duration means less effort and fewer missed meals. It also reduces saddle soreness. Which I am increasingly beginning to believe. Has more to do with folded padding between myself and the saddle. Rather than direct, sit bone soreness.

Pausing to stretch the "racing" shorts often cures the discomfort temporarily. Which is probably due to a build up of moisture from sweating too. Moisture increases friction. Which naturally occurs over a period of hours in the saddle. I have never tried any of the racing shorts, padding creams. It occurs to me that I could do a change of shorts on the return journey. If only to prove the friction hypothesis.

21.30 I made fish fingers and chips for dinner. No pictures? I was half way through eating it before I realised. By then it was much too late!😋

13th July 2023 Part 2. Heat pump[s]?

 ~o~

I keep wondering where, on earth, I could put a heat pump's indoor unit. The kitchen ceiling is low. With exposed joists. Nowhere on the upper walls in there, nor in either hall, makes any sense at all. I had a flash of inspiration yesterday. The heating unit could go under the open tread stairs. The ceiling height isn't much more than elsewhere but at least it wouldn't take up room on a useful wall.

The downside is bringing the heating hoses to the indoor unit. They would have to cross the low ceilings of the bathroom and rear entrance hall. Penetrating the modestly dimensioned joists? It might not even be possible. Easy access would also be required to the heating unit for filter cleaning and maintenance. So it couldn't go too high on the wall. Or the stairs would seriously hinder routine work.

There are floor standing, internal units but they are bulky and not so efficient as wall mounted units. Placement for maximum air movement is vital. No point in heating the corner of a single room. When the whole house needs efficient warmth. My "cottage" height ceilings and multiple rooms do not lend themselves to such placement. There is quite a modest house down the road. With at least five, visible heat pumps! One to each room!

A little homework later: The Panasonic floor standing units are really quite modest in size. 750W x 60cmH x 20cm deep. My fuzzy logic suggests that low lying unit will heat a space more effectively. What I am trying to avoid is the external heat pump under the bedroom window. Because of potential noise. Sadly that is precisely where one would be best sited. For a middle of the living room wall, floor mounted, indoor unit. Such a position would be some distance from the consumer unit for the power supply.  I dislike conduits running all over the outside of my hovel.

Such a position would push warm air towards the front hall and kitchen. Opening all the internal doors would provide a circuit for the warm air to travel in circles. Probably wishful thinking! The heat pump is supposed to provide background warmth when I am not at home. Also at night. Another option would be a heat pump in the kitchen and another in the lounge. Or, utilizing the unused underfloor heating in the bathroom and kitchen. The price of air to water units is falling.

Having a stove which lasts only a couple of hours is strictly the stuff of the 1950s!  People, myself included, need continuous warmth. Such warmth keeps the fabric of the building above freezing. Without it needing to be warmed up from scratch. Every time I light the stove on a winter morning.

Reducing the need for fetching and splitting logs would be a major advantage. I am getting no younger and my present strength and abilities may well be reduced. Logs need a car and a trailer. Both of which are rapidly nearing the ends of their useful lives.

For dinner I am going with chicken and mushroom curry. With Ben's Medium Curry sauce. It is ages since I had curry. It was too dry.

13.07.2023 More kitchen remodelling.

 ~o~

Thursday 13th 61F. Cool and bright but cloudy and really quite windy. The DMI radar shows an elongated patch of heavy rain with lightning. Passing just south in an east to northeasterly direction. The tail end crosses just us at around 8am. So an early walk is most sensible. My shoulders are still aching from yesterday's "exercise."

7.45 I returned as soon as I had taken a few snaps. To record progress on the earthworks. The sky to the south was darkening and looked untrustworthy. I brought in the overnight towels from the rotary airer. They would be fine if they had a tour on the indoor drier. Though it felt a bit silly to be hanging out more laundry. As they rain began to fall just after 7.30. Fortunately I was still wearing my winter rain jacket.

The pine cupboard has been brought in to newly dominate the middle of the kitchen. It looked half the size in the display area at the flea market. The plan is to put the cupboard in the space behind the door to the front hall.

The cupboard's contents will not be accessed very often. Mainly taking over larder duties on its top shelves. The picture is not very flattering but just to show the new layout. I have to take indoor pictures at waist height. To avoid serious, image distortion!

I am presently using an open rack for tins and jars. Hidden in the corner but it still looks untidy. As do the open shelves above. Again, access to those is only fleeting and not even on a daily basis. So the cupboard can really tidy up the present scene.

Having the fridge half hidden by the hall door is increasingly irritating. The fridge is accessed several times a day. It will be moved to the left for unhindered access. The left side of the cupboard can house the most used items. Where the hall door will not overlap. Now the fridge door is hung on the wrong side. A matter of removing a few screws and swapping the hinges and handles over. If the screws will still undo.

I could fold the glazed, hall door back against the wall. Or even lift the hall door off its hinges and store it against the wall. I'll see how that looks when I have the shelves taken down. At the moment these prevent the door being folded right back. That may be all that is required for the summer. The door can then be returned to normal duties later in the year. So that it can be opened and closed in winter. Mainly to cut down heat loss overnight.
