31.12.2022 Alas too late!

 ~~

Saturday 31st 8C/46F. Another grey and rainy day in prospect. Up at 4.30 after waking earlier. Rumours of my imminent demise were obviously exaggerated. I steel feel dull. Probably dehydration and hunger. Though I don't feel remotely hungry. The nausea has gone. My throat is still thick with phlegm. So that I have to keep clearing my throat. Had a cup of coffee. It tasted [fairly] normal.

5.00 Much too early for breakfast but am going to try anyway. Muesli + tea.

Regarding the fridge freezer: Temperatures in the freezer compartment continue to swing wildly. Lowest of -25C highest -8C. The room is averaging 55-57F/13-14C. Which is probably too low for reliability. The oil in the compressor becomes too stiff to pump. Depending on the climate rating. Usually +10C/50F minimum room temperature.

I think it would be much safer to dump the content of the freezer compartment. There isn't much in there anyway and cost of replacement is miniscule compared to my health. Update: Contents duly dumped in the bin.

Another factor has occurred to me: The mini-oven is standing on top of the freezer compartment. Despite the oven's large rubber feet it is possible it is radiating a lot of heat downwards. Straight into the freezer cabinet's top plate. Something I'll have to check.

Update: Two minutes after switching on the mini-oven the bottom plate was far too hot to touch. What a shame! It was so convenient to have it just there. I will have to add an insulated shelf, on more rubber feet, to block heat transfer to the freezer.

The fridge-freezer is years old but I have no way to confirm its age. It still looks almost new. Perhaps it has a date on a label on the back. If it matters. It has struggled with a cold, unheated kitchen, every winter, for years. My wife used to switch on the [cooker] oven and open the door when she had to be in there.

Now the kitchen has a small electric radiator right beside the fridge. Whether this helps or hinders normal operation I have no idea. The mechanical parts are at the rear. Where they need the minimum temperature to be above 10C. Warming the side of the cabinet may not be best practice! It may be the exact opposite. Update: Oil-filled radiator moved to the other end of the kitchen.

6.30 Stove lit and another cup of tea to help the rehydration along. It's going to be a long day! I have almost run out of the second trailer load of racist firewood. In a couple of days I shall have to start on the load from the other supplier.

He was quite honest that it hadn't had a chance to dry ready for the stove. I measured it at 20-25% moisture content at the time. He recommended I keep some logs near the fire to dry before use. There hasn't been remotely enough sunshine to help it dry in the greenhouse. Though temperatures are consistently higher than outside. Air humidity has been very high for ages.

On a completely different note: I found some tan coloured, cord, cushion covers on Ikea's website. Which would work perfectly as protective headrests for my tan, leather armchairs. I can click and collect [on the 2nd] but not have then delivered. Weird!

8.20 I hope to get a walk in before it starts raining all day. It is still too dark for safely walking beside the road. The green bin is waiting to be brought home from the end of the drive.

9.45 Back from my walk to the lanes. Grey with a cool breeze. I don't remember seeing any birds.

15.00 Raining. Spent the entire morning watching YT Shorts. Escapism. 🙄

17.30 Had another nap to try and catch up.

23.20 Dinner was cheese on toast and tomato soup. Still waiting for the racket to start at midnight. There have only been a few pretty rockets so far.

30.12.2022 Burp!

 ~~

Friday 30th 42F. A rather windy day is promised. Up at 5am. After a sleepless night. With chest pains and feeling queasy. I went down to make coffee and had to grab a bucket instead. A sudden fever and reaching. Though nothing came up. I could smell greasy chips and brown sauce. I had a tiny amount of sodium bicarbonate.

8.00 I haven't dared to eat or drink anything yet. I have been dozing in the TV armchair. For a couple of hours.

10.30. I managed to keep a cup of black coffee down. Lit the stove and then had another nap to catch up.

15.30 Still dozing in the chair. I wonder if it is Covid? Similar symptoms. I have had all the vaccines. Having so little to drink today 0.3L would have me feeling unwell through dehydration. I just had a cup of tea and it tasted awful!

17.45 Still dozing. No sleep tonight!

 10.45 Bed.

29 Dec 2022

29.12.2022 Wet.

 ~~

 Thursday 29th 8C/47F!  Up at 5am. 8.45 stove lit.

A wet start should take a pause after 9.15pm according to the forecaster's radar. No walk.

 Been shopping in the car.

Lunch over. Now with continuous rain and SW wind.

The green recycling bin has had its 110 meter dash for its early collection tomorrow morning.

The backlog of washing up is done.

Dinner was salmon pasty, peas and chips. There is something odd. When I cook something with chips on the same tray. It is as if it isn't hot enough to brown either. I gave it another ten minutes than it says on the packet. No change in the mini-oven settings. Still not brown.

9.00 I am having severe upper chest pains and my left arm hurts too. Last week it was pains across my shoulders. It is not heartburn but could be indigestion from eating greasy chips and a pasty. I am sweating too. With increasing nausea. I hope it isn't food poisoning! I have been to the toilet several times.

9.25 Now I have smelly diarrhoea! Wind from both ends. The fridge-freezer may not have been reliably cold enough. I found the remains of a bag of frozen peas at the back of the freezer compartment and had those with dinner. They had ten minutes of gentle boiling. I just checked: The freezer is only at -10C. It ought to be at -18C. The kitchen is at 14C/57F. Which ought to be high enough for the fridge to work normally.

10.25 Lay down in bed.

11.00 Took some sodium bicarbonate in water. Back to bed.

12.00 Still no change. Got up again. Still in pain.

1,2,3,4,5 chest pain and queasy all night.

28.12.2022 Did the homework. Got the App.

 ~~

Wednesday 28th 40F. Up at 5.30 after waking earlier. Still not feeling right. I am aching, dull, headaches, nosebleeds and very tired. I was struggling to stay awake for most of yesterday and during the evening. Party PTSD? I drank only water and lemonade while I was there.

  Frontpage » Museum Vestfyn

I have an appointment after lunch to have a first assessment of my experience with the hearing aids. Thanks to their poor performance in noisy environments I have very mixed feelings. I wish I had been able to try them in the noisy, coffee break at the museum.

At the party I was constantly turning the volume up and down in a desperate attempt to hear individual's voices above the din. Turning my head did not provide the hoped-for improvement. There was no sense of location of the person who was speaking. Nor did their voices increase in clarity.

The stove was very reluctant to light this morning. I had to keep relighting it and adding more kindling. It is going well now but some logs seem resistant to burning. All are below 20% moisture content.

9.10 and it's very dark, windy and wet. No walk today. I am watching YT videos about my hearing aids and expectations for new users of hearing aids.

A morning of research and testing. To see if there is anything I can do to improve my experience with the hearing aids. Music, test tones, etc. I have an audible lift in the 2.5-4kKz range on the left aid. I have even tried my closed headphones for improved sound quality on both music and test tones. They fit nicely around the hearing aids and really improve the bass.

12.15 Just returning from a gentle stroll around the neighbourhood. It brightened up but I just missed the sunshine. A pair of birds of prey were playing in the area. Diving at each other and calling. There was no obvious aggression. Probably a pair of harriers. Judging by the size, colouring and long tails. A flock of nervous Redwings are preening in the garden trees.

12.45. Time to make lunch before a shower and heading into town.

17.00  At the hearing aid appointment I explained my difficulties. Adjustments were made to the frequency responses to better natch my poor hearing. I have a new appointment for a follow up in January. My phone was updated with the App. So now I have control of level, balance, GPS location and can check various options like individual battery level.

Three programs have been set up for me in noisy, quiet situations and comfort. Direct streaming of TV sound [and many other sources] is a possibility but may require an extra box. The Internet of Things means that doorbells and other "smart" devices can be heard directly though the aids.

Dinner was mackerel on toast and tomato soup.

27.12.2022 Aftermath and analysis.

 ~~

Tuesday 27th 35F. Up at 7.40 after waking at 4 and 6am. I woke feeling as if every muscle in my body was tense and had been overworked.

I was so tired after the party that I was shaking behind the wheel all the way home. I was sensible though and kept my speed right down on the all but empty roads. I hadn't driven much in the dark recently. Nor had I imbibed so much as a drop of alcohol.

The intense concentration required to listen to single voices in such a din really took it out of me. There were thirteen of us around the dining table in a room just able to house us all. Not to mention how little I have been exposed to such noisy groups for many years. The racket in the dining room at the museum now seems relatively restrained. Where I haven't had the advantage of wearing my hearing aids yet. The museum volunteers are taking a break over the holidays.

I do understand that there is a steep learning curve in the use of hearing aids. The wearer's brain has to learn to hear and decipher the sounds it now hears. After decades of poor hearing in my case.

It was only polite for me to show rapt attention to somebody speaking directly to me. Even if I could hear only one in five words clearly. Then having to simultaneously translate what I had heard into something meaningful. To which I could then respond intelligently in the same language.

Certain voices were pitched in the deep troughs of my still poor, hearing's frequency response. Despite the hearing aids being [allegedly] set up to exactly match my hearing loss.

None of this was remotely the fault of those present. They were all wonderful people and fascinating characters in their own right. All had succeeded in life and were warm, confident and comfortable in their familiar surroundings. I am deeply grateful that my hosts had invited me to share their annual, family Christmas, get-together.

My hostess had a genius for distributing ornaments and pictures to achieve visual perfection. It was quite magical how she had filled all of the spaces available. I was so inspired I shall attempt the clumsy man's version of the same. There is a strange feeling of fate surrounding my visit. As if I needed to see her accomplishments to further my own projects at home. Just as the brick wall at the cooking class was identical to my own. My English friend's decor held further clue as to how I might proceed. His knowledge of building work, phones and computers has been immensely helpful.

I must say that I was very disappointed with the hearing aids' inability to cut through the background noise. Even more so when I removed them after the batteries went flat. The aids are fine for amplifying individual's voice against normal, background noise. Almost any microphone, amp and headphone set-up could do the same job. I had been using clever boxes to do much the same thing for years. In my audio set up at home. However, the higher the background noise levels became, the worse the aids performed. This was not my "reasonable expectation" given the very high price tag.

There is this slight sense of paranoia that I will be advised to "upgrade." To obtain the aid performance I really need. What if the frequency response had not been perfectly set to match my hearing needs? Then I would inevitably become a candidate. For the salesperson's professional advice. We shall see tomorrow. When I have an after lunch appointment for an initial follow up of my progress.

Allowing the batteries to go flat was complete idiocy on my part. I has considered changing them before leaving but hadn't had this problem before. Previously I had changed the batteries only once after a few days. Now I shall have to take the task far more seriously. It takes only moments and the batteries are free. The hearing aids are tiny and all but invisible in use but frighteningly expensive.

Perhaps "The App" would give me the control I [might] need over level, balance and frequency response. Who knows? Even the best App might require I whip out my still unfamiliar, mobile phone [and put on my reading glasses] and start tapping away at the screen. Which is hardly appropriate behaviour in any social situation!

8.50 Brighter today. With lots of pink and grey banded clouds against pale turquoise. Cooler too. So I should have lit the stove by now. Instead of waffling on. I also lost several hours of heat output yesterday evening. To help to keep the house topped up with warmth.

9.10 Stove lit. Time for a walk to unwind.

10.20 I reached the road before returning for my gloves. It was just a little too cold on my hands in the light breeze. The low sun burst through briefly on the horizon. A solitary Whooper swan, two large birds of prey and assorted gulls provided the ornithological entertainment for today. Traffic was light. Stove going well. Morning coffee over. Time to go shopping or there will be no lunch.

11.30 3C/28F. Shopping completed and returned the poorer but unscathed. It's really quite sunny now. The greenhouse is showing 9C/48F. So 6C/10F above the outside temperature. It may go higher if the sunshine continues. It reached 10C/52F against an outside temperature of 3C/37F. This must have warmed the front [southerly] wall to some extent. Thereby reducing the heat required from the stove. Or, an increase in indoor comfort for the same heat output. I have the hall doors to the kitchen open again and the kitchen is at 17C/62F.

14.40 Returning from the observatory. More time wasted on imaging clouds instead of the sun.

15.00 I have been listening to various voices on YouTube. There is clear distortion when wearing the hearings aids. Removal of the right side aid only [my far better hearing ear] removes the distortion. Not a good result! The left aid was left in place and working normally. I was careful to avoid increased levels with the right hearing aid in place and without.

Dinner was chicken and brown mushrooms with chips.

26 Dec 2022

26.12.2022 Beating my chest!

 ~~

Monday 26th 41F. Thick mist. Mostly wet today. Up at 6am. Stove lit at 6.45. Indoor temperatures remain stable and comfortable by my own standards. While wearing fleece trousers, a T-shirt and a warm jumper.

I spent some time in the lounge early this morning. Removing the drawers from the chest and arranging everything out of the way. To allow the heavy chest to be dragged to the opposite corner. It was already 21C. So I was a bit too warm by the time I had pushed everything back again.

The hall doors have been opened. To share the heat with the kitchen. A better picture will follow in daylight. When I have had a chance to reorganise the chaotic storage situation. The longcase clock and chest of drawers make suitable companions.

It has been hovering around 19-20C upstairs day and night. Starting at 15C and ending at 19-20C in the lounge. The kitchen remained at 15C yesterday thanks to my open door policy. Dropping to 14C overnight with the small electric radiator going. All thanks to the relatively mild outdoor temperatures of 4-5C.

I am consuming quite a lot of logs to keep things this comfortable. With the old stove and burning briquettes I would have been wearing a down jacket and fleece hat. Over my normal winter clothes. Plus the inevitable, full length, thermal underwear.

Not any longer. The modern stove completely eclipses the old, antique box stove. Such a shame that my wife would not let me have the new one installed. I waited for months after its delivery. While it blocked access to the kitchen in the entrance hall. I still have the scars from repeatedly tripping over the pallet. On which it stood in the dark. Before our kind sweep installed it expertly and professionally. While my wife was in hospital.

I keep taking new pictures to try and capture a more flattering cottage "atmosphere." The cheap cushions are temporary. Until I find something larger and more appropriate.

Most of the supermarkets are closed today. With at least one exception. Should I decide to drive there. It is only a few short miles away in another shopping village. I could have cycled there but the weather is promising to be inclement for several days. Even windy at times. As fronts and lows move across the North Sea.

A "party" demands my attendance this evening at 17.00. About 15 miles away by car. So there will be no drinking. I am pondering on my remaining wardrobe. Having given most of my more formal "British" clothing away to charity.

In the Britain, of 30 years ago, I would normally wear a tweed jacket and trousers. Striped shirt and tweed tie. In modern Denmark, a pair of jeans and a jumper over a T-shirt. May be rather nearer the norm.

How could I possibly know? Parties were not something we ever did. Not in all the time we have been here. Nor all the years before that.

9.00 Time for a walk. Misty, a cool breeze and spots of rain in the air. Traffic modest. It started raining briefly on the return journey from the lanes.

12.30. I have been investigating the north wall for insulation. 50mm of foam mounted on a timber skeleton fixed to the mostly damaged plasterboard. Poor [open] joints and no DPM. No longer legal, nor desirable construction. Nor thick enough for modern standards of insulation.

The free standing, brick inner wall has always been cold. So must have no insulation as far as I know. It runs parallel with the ceiling joists so is not structural. Though it does support an exposed cross beam. [Lintel?] Where an internal, dividing wall was removed at the chimney in the past. The external wall has been cracking for years in the centre. Now cross pinned and fixed.

A structural floor pad and matching, upright beam indoors might be an idea. Professional advice would be valuable to discuss my options for this wall. It must be dragging a lot of heat out of the lounge. Even the removal man, 26 years ago, told us it was a cold wall!

13.30 7C/45F!  Rain and increasing SW wind. Lunch over.

I have just checked all the wall surfaces in the lounge with the "pistol" remote sensing thermometer. All the walls are at the air temperature of the room. 20C. With only a slight decline approaching the floor. 20C-18C. Will this hold true when the outside temperatures drop?

14.20 The low sun has just burst through the clouds to light up the attic! Meanwhile, the northern sky is black! Now breaking up to cloud and turquoise. The forecaster's radar shows bands of rain crossing the country.

11.00 Safely home from the family party. It was fun but exhausting. As usual I struggled to hear voices against loud background noise. The batteries went flat in my hearing aids. So I removed them. Without obvious loss or gain. Which was disappointing.

25 Dec 2022

25th December 2022 Disaster averted!

 ~~

Sunday 25th 4C/40F, Up at 6.10. Still 19C/67F upstairs.

7.45 The stove is lit and going well. Spreading the warmth ensures the whole house becomes [slightly] more comfortable. Rather than stripping off in the only heated room.

Man went to the moon 50 years ago and survived flaming re-entry. 50 years later there is still no sensible insulation for cold homes. Yet we are all told to cut back on our heating. Both for the climate's sake and for reducing our inflated bills.

Home insulation costs so much that it may never pay for itself. A heat pump in an uninsulated home is keeping the birds warm. Those without home insulation are most often those who suffer from energy poverty.

Is spending countless billions on offshore wind farms really the best way to reduce CO2? Or is it just the most profitable and inefficient way to subsidise the 1%?  The same, alien elite which is terraforming the Earth. For their own comfort and tax-free profit.

8.40 I have opened my presents. Thank you for your kindness and generosity. Happy Christmas.

Light enough now for a walk. Grey, misty and rather windy!

9.40 5C/41F. Heavy overcast, Back safely from a walk to the village. Only 3 or 4 cars passed me. I didn't see a single car moving until I reached the village. A cool headwind on the way back. Flocks of up to 50 small birds moved along the roadside hedges. Mostly finches.

The stove was still alight. With the intervening doors to the kitchen open. My thinking is that heat loss is proportional to the temperature difference. Between hot air and cold surfaces. So spreading the heat, at a lower temperature, should result in lower losses. Despite the surface area of the cold walls being much larger.

Had a nice long chat with my brother on the phone and a WhatsApp chat with my friend.

11.50 My first DIY "Christmas Dinner" is demanding my increased attention. Very useful advice coming in on preparation and cooking. I just need to get my timing right for the various tasks. I have the option of using the oven or the frying pan for the baked potatoes and chicken. Still not decided. I'll start with preparing the Brussels sprouts and the baking potatoes. Then go on from there.

Everything was perfect despite the potatoes taking an age to soften. Or perhaps because of it. I sat down at the table with a mound of food on my plate.. Something was missing? Gravy!

I dashed back to the kitchen and quickly made some Bisto gravy. Another first! The plate stayed warm on top of the cooling potato saucepan. A couple of minute later I was able to pour the gravy onto the waiting plate. Then I was tucking into my very first fully self-made, Christmas Dinner. Thanks to the long slow cook everything was perfect.

Lessons learned. Wait for the potatoes to begin to soften before starting anything else.  Make only 1/3 of the potatoes I think I need. Halve the number of carrots. Remember the gravy!

BTW: It wasn't a patch on my wife's cooking. Her Christmas Dinners were always the highlight of the day. She once made a full chicken Christmas Dinner dinner in the windowsill of our derelict cottage in a mini-oven as we waited to start work on the place. We were living in the garden shed at the time.

I have been talking to family members for hours today. I've done the washing up. I don't need to make anything to eat. Will Netflix have anything worth watching?

A Merry Christmas to all my readers. 💥

24 Dec 2022

24.12.2022 Tearful reminiscence.

 ~~

Saturday 24th 0C/31F. Up at 6.30 after a restless night. I had to get up at 1pm with unhappy thoughts and chest pains. The stove was still burning thanks to extra logs at bedtime. I did some laundry to end the backlog. Then browsed on the computer. Back to bed at 2.45pm.

Could the muscular pains be due to giving up Vitamin D and zinc? I had been taking both for years along with a C tablet but gave up when stocks ran out at home. I didn't bother to buy more.

My wife had taken vitamins and endless supplements for decades. It didn't seem to do her much good in the end. Nor make her any happier in winter. It may even have caused her problems. Though she often blamed her unhappiness on their stopping her HRT.

She would search online for reasons to take weird supplements and orders were duly placed. The bulk of all the bottles and packets, left when she died, amounts to a large bucket full. I put them all in a large storage tub and left it in the lounge. I am not sure what to do with them. Unused medicines are supposed to be returned to the pharmacists. I doubt they'd be interested in supplements. Some of the recycling yards have a toxic container. That might be an option.

7.30 The stove is lit. I now find I can't just sit and watch the flames. While listening to the two competing grandfather clocks going in and out of phase with each other. I always return to the computer upstairs. I can't even imagine having the PC downstairs. Not after all these years. Where would it go? I can see the garden trees to the north. Over the top of the monitor screen while sitting at my dormer window. The sun is always behind me. So doesn't ever blind me.

It is usually warmer up here for most of the year. With unwanted warmth only in the summer heat waves. Sleeping downstairs was hardly an option back then. The lounge was always filled to the very brim.

The lounge as it was for 20 years.

Though a better bed is needed downstairs. If I am to spend much time sleeping down there. I was sleeping on a thick, foam, folding mattress for a few nights this last summer. Too firm, even by the standards of my own, pocket sprung bed.

My bed is never going down the steep and narrow stairs. Not without a monumental struggle. Far too heavy to manage easily. Not even the mattress alone. The base is even heavier and rigid. My wife's bed remains in the bedroom, I could take it over. Then move my own bed downstairs. Or vice versa. Or buy a cheap divan?

My bed could slide out of the balcony window and down a ladder. I have done that with furniture out of the original bedroom window. Then the bed could be manhandled around to the entrance door. Perhaps on the sack truck? Up the few steps and then through the hall to the lounge. I have several furniture trolleys to aid this part of the journey. Bed resting on one edge.

Where could a bed not be a bulky nuisance in the lounge? Beyond the dining table opposite the stairs? It would seem very odd to pass a bed at the entrance to the living room. Disguise it somehow? What about under the southern windows? No. If it were placed against the brick wall it would push the leather armchairs out too far. They would be crowding the stove.

Put the bed in place of the big chest of drawers in the NE corner? That might work. The chest is only half as deep as a bed pushed up against the wall. The chest could then go opposite the stairs. Almost back to its starting point. Where it was standing for the last 20 years.

Or, what about moving the chest over in the opposite corner? Near the southern windows. It could become a well lit repository for some of my wife's personal treasures. The coloured glass vases would look well. With the light from the window beyond.

I have endless flexibility to make my own decisions about furnishing the lounge. Always within its quite generous dimensions and fixed window positions. Sorry if I am boring anybody. I like to think aloud, in text form. To examine options, alternatives and to find the glaring faults in my plans. I tried drawing new layouts on a floor plan but my scale is completely haywire.

I need to print a simple floor plan. Then cut out moveable card templates to represent the furniture in true scale. There is plenty of room for the dining chairs on the end of the table if the spare bed goes into corner. In place of the chest of drawers. I used the dimensions instead and then scaled the drawing. It still isn't perfect but will do.

Or the dining chairs can be lost behind the table. To be pulled out in the event of an invasion of visitors. Or one, or two dining chairs could be parked elsewhere when not needed. The bed can become the spare should there be solo visitors. They wouldn't want to share the bedroom. Not with me spinning like a top all night. Nor the nightmare of sleeping upstairs in its present state!

8.42. Daylight. A hard, white, rime frost. Everything is coated. Time for my walk.

Two lorries passed me on the road. Perhaps they were restocking the supermarkets. I cut across the hard frozen prairie. To reach the familiar main track to the forest. Though I turned back towards the village. Instead of proceeding further.

The sense of isolation triggered an apologetic monologue to my late wife. The endless bare soil seemed to represent the desert of empty time. Stretching off into my pointless future.

Which ended with me in tears of abject misery at the loss of her companionship. My burning inability to undo all that I had ever done to cause her grief. Over our very long lifetime together. Then a severe nose bleed resulted from blowing my nose too hard. It's always about me.

10.00 I returned to the pile of washing up. That "somebody" hadn't done again last night. So there would be no coffee until at least one mug had been washed and rinsed.  I washed the new cutlery tray as well. Just to be sure it was clean. If only to start with.

The stove was still burning well. So I added a larger log to prolong the next burn. While I munched my marmalade coated, bread roll and waffled upstairs on my interminable blog.

 13.45 Lunch over.

14.40 +2C/36F. Very dark overcast with rain promised.

15.30 I have been placing boxes to mark the boundaries of the bed in the corner layout. There is plenty of room. Even if I wanted to keep all three armchairs in the lounge. I had been worried the bed might dominate the room. Though it could be easily disguised with a cloth, there are alternatives.

The bed need not be made up with bedding until required. The bare bed and firm mattress could be covered in a thick sheet of plywood to become a large desk. The plywood sheet to be dropped over the back of the bed against the wall when the bed is in active use.

Somewhat surprisingly the bed is the same height as my keyboard on the desk upstairs. Only a small overhang would be required to allow me to have my knees slightly beneath the board. To provide a comfortable reach for the keyboard without leaning forwards. This need not be the entire board, Though room must be found for the mouse mat.

18.00 Been chatting on WhatsApp. Built the stove up with big logs. Then opened all the internal doors for a bit of heat distribution. Had a shower while it was warm. It has reached 20C upstairs. Which is a  bit warm. The back door is now much better sealed. So all the heat is not escaping that way. Particularly when the wind is so light. Which really helps to warm the place up. The wind finds the draughty spots.

Dinner, looks like another fry up. Sausage, eggs and mushrooms.. and.. I bought some tomatoes. I had the tomatoes cold and munched my way through a chaotic, WhatsApp video conference with family members. 😋

23 Dec 2022

23.12.2022 Give me sunshine!

 ~~

Saturday 23rd 38F. We might see some sunshine later.

Up at 6.20.  I was far too hot in the night under my winter duvet! 20.5C/69F upstairs. Luckily I still had my summer duvet nearby. A quick swap and I was comfortable again.

A phone camera capture of my favourite landscape. I love the way the slopes run into each other. I must have taken hundreds of snaps of this scene. In all light and weather conditions over the years. Today the sun is at its lowest point. Barely grazing the slopes and stretching my shadow over many yards.

10.00 Back from a walk to the lanes as the sun rose. 36F cold but not freezing. I was perfectly comfortable in my down sweater. A bird of prey flew off. Just as two geese passed noisily overhead. The stove is lit and morning coffee over.

I need more shopping and some kindling. Which limits me to returning to the same village as yesterday. The sheltered workshop, kindling source may not be open so close to Christmas. I had better start there.

13.00 Bright sunshine all morning. I have returned from a three village shopping trip. I was given a free sack of kindling when I said the last one would not burn. I found several secondhand cutlery trays to expand my drawer's single tray. I need a separate tray for the bread knife and some cooking implements.  At present everything slides to the back of the drawer unrestrained.

The stove kept going on two large logs. Which I had ensured were burning well before turning down the air supply. Intervening hall doors were opened. So the kitchen had risen to 15C/64F. 20C/70F upstairs and in the lounge. The greenhouse is warm too. Which will help the logs to dry. The sun through the front window is burning my back as I sit at the computer. Despite wearing a thick jumper.

After lunch I went over to the observatory. Which proved to be pointless. The wireless keyboard would not work. Then  the mono screens of the software on the monitor turned red and turquoise. I think the screen has a cold!

Dinner was mackerel on toast, tomato soup and a roll.

22.12.2022 Imposing my will on a vacuum.

 ~~

Thursday 22nd 5C/41F. Up at 5.45. The usual aches and pains from yesterdays exertions. Not that burning pain of a couple of days ago. Remaining mild. Upstairs 19C/66F, Lounge 16C/61F, Kitchen 13C/56F, Bathroom 10C/50F.

I am surprised how cool the lounge is this morning. The stove was still burning well at bedtime. 11.45pm. I was going to bed at 11pm but forgot the dustbin had to go along the drive. This meant extracting the bag from the large, flip-top bin in the kitchen. Before trundling, noisily along the 100m on gravel in the pitch dark.

I added a couple of logs. Then sat and watched the flames in the stove on my return. Our last stove had a solid iron door. It was a miserable experience not being able to see the flames. It also meant opening the door all too frequently. Just to monitor how well the fire was burning. I was not allowed to touch the stove. My wife was the sole loader-operator.

We used only compressed sawdust briquettes. Then the price went through the roof after loony Pootin's invasion of Ukraine. There was a time one could buy five bags x 10kg for 100kr at the farmer's supplies shop. Now it is 69Kr per bag! Wood pellets have also increased in price. Quite why that affects the tens of thousands of cubic meters of firewood logs at the Danish sawmills remains a mystery. Their vast storage sheds are just as full now. As they were before gas prices exploded. Is there some shortage?

My British friend in Denmark has woken me to all the camera options in my new smart phone. I had no idea. The quality of its images are amazing. My old Lumix TZ7 seems completely inadequate in comparison. So that I no longer bother to drag it around with me. I am still discovering all the available adjustments of the phone cameras. The one downside is needing my most powerful reading glasses to make these adjustments. Not to mention bare fingers to tap the touch screen. Not ideal in winter. The camera was set and the button pressed. Job done.

7.00 Breakfast over. Time to light the stove. First, I'll have to bring in more logs. The stove is insatiable!

8.00 Heavily overcast. First light is silhouetting the garden trees. They are rocking gently to the South-Westerly breeze. The lounge has quickly warmed to the stove. I ought to be more self-disciplined with the fire-making apparatus. It is sprawled over two metres of wall space. Only the tall clock case stops it from encroaching even further.

As I look around the scruffy lounge I realised that I have not remotely stamped my ownership on my hermit's cave. It has two grandfather clocks, a dining table and chairs, a chest of drawers and lots of boxes. My tastes in decor are not remotely expressed by the remaining furniture. A few, Ikea plant stands do not make a home.

This is after my initial tidying! 😄

I had no place in furnishing decisions.Which tended towards charity shop and flea market finds. Usually in some shade of oak bordering on dark. Now I have a choice, I find myself lacking the imagination. To impose my will on the space I have available. Universal white paint does not a home make. It merely exposes the continuing ugliness of the walls and ceilings.

It has never occurred to me that I have a duty to myself to make it more about me. As well as basically habitable. I have been concentrating so hard on the removal of so much of the house's contents. As if there were some race to be rid of it all. When what it really needs is far better organisation. Of all of it!

Sadly this was never my strong suit. I have clear memories of utter chaos. Going right back to early childhood and my perpetually shared bedrooms. The floor was where things were assembled and played with. Nothing much has changed.

 The kitchen back in 2018.
It looked like this for two decades.

The sheds are always impossible to access. Even after I brought in lots of shelving racks and bought trays and tubs. To replace damp, cardboard, fruit boxes. Forever on the verge of collapse or complete dismemberment.

8.30. Still too dark for a safe walk along the verge against the traffic. If I had the willpower I'd be tidying the shed to make room for more wood. I should be concentrating on clearing the greenhouse. Not wasting hours moping.

I heard that successful people work to lists of things to do. I tried that but quickly lost interest. The randomness of my decisions to work on specific tasks is far too willy-nilly. I build impossible hurdles in my mind. As Catch 22 situation constantly confront my progress.

That said, the latest kitchen layout is very satisfying. The unbelievable convenience of being able to turn on the spot from the working surface. To access the fridge, just behind me, is a new highlight. The fridge door now opens to expose its interior to the room. After two decades of it blocking easy access at the far end of the kitchen.

10.00 A late walk going the wrong way for a change scenery. Slightly misty as the veiled sun breaks though. Took lots of landscape snaps. Still sorting though to see if anything is worth sharing.

12.45 I have been clearing and tidying the greenhouse. Not enough for a trailer full but I have to go shopping anyway. So I might as well take it all with me. It is difficult to know what to do with some of it. How do I store the big shade nets? They are each over 8m long x 4m wide when open and very bulky. I have just bundled them into a heap on the table.

The stove is going well. I am experimenting with larger logs to see if they burn without supervision. The one I tried was fine. It was getting rather warm though. So I opened the hall doors out to the kitchen again. The kitchen rose to 15C/60F. The greenhouse rose to 10C/49F in weak sunshine. The sun has gone in now and it has turned very dark. No showers forecast.

I'm going shopping but without the trailer. I need time to sort out what I want to keep and where to get rid of the rest. Charity or recycling.

17.00 Just back from shopping for Christmas Dinner. Chicken breasts, Brussels sprouts, baking potatoes, peas, carrots and brown mushroom. Time to get creative. Whatever that means within the context of a "fried or boiled" complete amateur. 😋

Dinner is looming. I have bought my very first sausages. Grr! I forgot to buy more oven-ready chips! It will still have to be a fry up. Sausages, eggs and mushrooms.

With tinned tomatoes? I have pasta as well. That soaks up the tomato juice. I'm not sure pasta and sausages makes much sense. No pasta then. Fried fresh tomatoes. Bread roll to finish.

20.00 No fresh tomatoes either! So it was the big red slotted spoon's turn to drain the excess tomato juice. The result looks awful but it was fine. Except I broke an egg trying to turn it over in a [recently] non-stick pan. Presentation 3/10? 😁

21 Dec 2022

21.12.2022 Guilt, regret and being utterly powerless.

 ~~

Wednesday 21st 41F. Milder weather is pushing indoor temperatures up. Upstairs 19C/67F, Lounge 17C/63F, Kitchen 14C/57F, Bathroom 10C/50F.

Up at 5.45. The shoulder pain persisted until bedtime. Very unpleasant indeed at times. With the pain travelling down my left arm causing pins and needles.

Lower back pain again this morning. Pins and needles right down my left arm and into my left hand. No loss of sensation or numbness. Just had a nose bleed. I have messaged the doctor to say I have ceased taking the 4mg Doxazosin tablets for my prostate enlargement.

It should remain dry but misty today. So I can bring the last of the logs into the greenhouse. The latter is badly in need of tidying but it has too many close associations with my late wife. She would sew seeds, transfer the seedlings to pots and grow them on out there.

There were always ragged, lightweight, white tarpaulins dangling from the ceiling for summer shade. Making it all but impossible for me to move around out there. The walls were covered in cheap, white shower curtains. It was always full of unused furniture, timber, boxes and trolleys out there. Meaning that the end doors could not even be reached for ventilation.

Outside, were ten feet high walls of hedging and towering conifers. All in the desperate hope of summer shade. Each memory brings pangs of severe regret that I could not overcome her resistance to clearing it all out. There were cane chairs and settees piled up. Which were never used in twenty years. I would suggest I remove them but she would not have it. This was her refuge, in the growing season and I was never welcome out there.

The green shade net came too much late to have any real impact on her comfort. There was the Covid pandemic and fear of infection. My wife referred to Covid as the last straw. She was deeply depressed by that point. Despite this, she insisted on washing the shopping where possible. Or storing it for long enough to reduce the chance of infection. Ironically it was not the virus which killed her. She had flatly refused to have the vaccines because of "side effects."

My blog has become a diary of the trivialities of my everyday existence. This ignores the profound changes which I have made since the death of my wife. Her resistance to anything I suggested still has an affect on many of my present decisions. Old habits are ingrained and die hard. I am torn between necessity and the burning guilt at everything I do.

My wife will never enjoy the improvements in light, comfort, freedom of movement and space I have achieved. Yet it was she who decided, if only by default, that no such changes were made. I feel horribly disloyal to her memory and her wishes as I remove the layers of her own, dreary existence. Which hampers my desire to be rid of much of the clutter. Yet each item, of the thousands, were Her [untouchable] possessions. Even if they were never available for display.

Could I have done more to make her more comfortable in our dark and cold hovel in that last winter? I tried, but my attempts were always rejected. I bought a new wood stove and she would not let me install it. It sat on its pallet for months in the hall. Blocking the way to the kitchen and causing pain! I bought several fan heaters to warm the cold kitchen. She would not use any of them. When I put up a thermometer she would take it down and hide it.

She would shower or bathe in the freezing bathroom. The fan heater[s] unused. Because she didn't like the noise! I suggested she turn the fan off once it was warm in there. But no.

I had to wait for months until she was in hospital. To have the new stove installed by our kind master sweep. My wife was furious when she was propped up in her hospital [death] bed. In the now empty lounge.

I bought her a high quality, warm, down sweater a year earlier. She refused to wear it until the bitter end. I bought several, high quality down duvets to keep her warm in bed. She rejected them all as too heavy.  Until she was finally too weak to resist. Yet she complained bitterly about the weight of her own bedding.

Her last winter was spent under an old and heavy, secondhand, feather and down duvet. In the semi-darkness of our annually hot and cold, attic bedroom. Her bedding was bought from a charity shop two decades earlier. There were other, much warmer duvets in her huge stock but she refused use them.

She died under a brand new, super quality, snow white, goose down duvet without a cover. No cover, in case the weight was too much for her. Even the nurses and home helps asked whether it should have a cover. I had to point out that she hated the weight of her bedding pressing down on her. Her wishes were [always] my command.

9.00 I left at nine for a brisk walk to the lanes. Hundred yard/metre patchy mist. The air slightly to cool for comfort on my bare, swinging hands. The prairies and roadside fields had been ploughed. A uniform chocolate brown stretched as far as the mist would allow. I took to the verge whenever a vehicle approached. No point in hampering their journey. The tractor and flail had been along. To scatter the prickly, roadside hedgerows over the entire width of the road. Cyclists beware!

10.00 Morning coffee ritual over. My back pain and pins and needles have subsided for the moment. Time to deal with that remaining firewood. Though there is presently nowhere for it to go. Not unless I pile it up in front of all the lounge windows. So, the utterly pointless furniture and trolleys must finally take a hike!

They owe me nothing. The recycling yard beckons. They have outlasted their purpose as a barricade against normality. They will go outside. Until the trailer is emptied of firewood. Ready to ferry more detritus. From a former life of endless despair. Her life ruined thanks to a lunatic for a mother. For years we were invited over to live with her in Denmark. We were there for a couple of weeks before her mother threw us both out on a Sunday night. With all our furniture and belongings still taking up space. In one of her huge, open barns.

11.30 42F. Still misty. I now have all the firewood in the greenhouse. Today's logs had to be stacked in front of yesterday's. Four trolleys and a metal table have gone out into the trailer. Assorted metalwork for the charity container. I have downsized the wasted space in the greenhouse by about 40%. Lots of useful wood to take to the shed. This will really help to make more room. Then I can get to the picnic table to tidy that. For years it was my wife's work table. When she was busy with her gardening.

12.15. The village, recycling yard has been completely re-arranged in an oval over a larger space. A useful improvement. Previously, the most used containers were all packed together. One slow person and a queue of cars and trailers would form. I had to replace the pilot wheel clamp on my trailer. The screw thread on the clamping handle had worn out over the years. Now as good as new.

15.20 5C/40F. 21C/70F indoors! It feels like an oven coming in from outside. I'll open the doors to the kitchen to share the warmth. It is 14C/57F out there at the moment.

Meanwhile, I had better move the useful wood from the greenhouse to the shed. Before it gets dark or rains. Three wheelbarrows full so far. The shed now needs to be tidied to make room for more wood.

16.00 Already dusk. The kitchen is up to 15C/60F. A fan would speed the transfer of heat.

19.30  Dinner was poached eggs on toast with tomato soup and a bread roll. Phone image by artificial light and resized. The freezer fluctuations in temperature do not give me the confidence to buy any more frozen food at the moment.

20 Dec 2022

20.12.2022 The thaw and more firewood.

~~

Tuesday 20th 7C/44F. Up at 5.30. Getting warmer. 17C/63F upstairs. 15C/59F in the lounge. Kitchen at 10C/51F, Bathroom 9C/49F. All day rain is promised. That should wash away any remaining snow. A possible pause in the rain around lunch time. The freezer is back up to -8C.

 Experimenting with the phone camera.
The kitchen in all its hideous glory.

6.30 I have a sudden and severe burning pain right across my shoulders! Back and muscle pain is a known side effect of Sandoz Doxazosin. Which I started taking for prostate enlargement. One reference said it should not be prescribed for the elderly. Any benefits in the prostate are merely suppression of the symptoms due to relaxation. The prostate does not shrink.

7.15 The stove is lit. There is a very noticeable difference in the way the flames are dancing when there is some wind. The paper in the bottom of the stove is fluttering after it has almost burnt away. The wind has been very light recently. I have had to turn the air supply right down.

I continue to try different stretches and exercises to combat the shoulder pain. The pain came on before I took today's tablet.

I turned on the outside lights to be able to fetch more split logs in from the greenhouse. There are only a few patches of snow left. Where I shovelled it off the drive into heaps. The logs have an average moisture content of just under 20% according to my Morsø meter. Which has a habit of not waking up despite frequent button presses.

8.00 The stove is now struggling to stay alight! Weird. Still pitch black outside. With just a hint of the trees against the dark grey sky.

8.15. I've been having a WhatsApp chat with my British friend. I can see the trees moving in the wind now.

8.30 It looks like standing water reflecting the sky on the back field. It used to flood every year. There has been lots of building and earthworks since then. The stove now needs full draught just to stay alight. I am going for a walk as soon as it is light. I don't care about the rain.

8.45. Still not light enough for a walk.

9.30 Morning coffee and a marmalade roll after a shortened walk. It was no fun walking against the traffic in the rain. Now it is becoming misty. The light patches in the back fields were only snow.

Picasa won't download my phone photos. I am having to copy them from the resized Google Photos. Not ideal! They don't appear in Pictures or Picasa. The latter has been my image catalogue for years.

I can finally empty the recycling basket now the snow has gone. I badly need slip-on Wellies like slippers. Just for going outside on short errands. Sheepskin slippers are hopeless in wet conditions. I may have to go back to my sandals now it is warmer. Not that they are any better in the wet.

12.00 7C/45F. Returning from collecting a large trailer load of [clean] split beech logs from a new source. I found a cheap SS saucepan in the Co-op, another pair of cheap reading glasses and some bananas.

The logs are safely under a tarpaulin in the trailer outside the greenhouse until it stops raining. They will have to come into the greenhouse but will need a new space. Unless I move the existing stack to make room for lots more. I don't want to mix new logs with old. There will almost certainly be a difference in moisture content.

Moving the original stack is inefficient use og time and resources. Collecting logs from further along the greenhouse in a basket is hardly an extra burden. So I levelled the top of the original stack and set up a vertical separator. Then I moved the several trolleys which were pointlessly taking up space against the house wall.

I can now stack the new logs nearer the house doors. I shall use a plastic basket to carry logs in from the trailer. This will reduce the number of journeys drastically. At least eight logs per basket load. Compared with carrying only two or three logs in my arms. Toing and froing is a very slow process. Where lots of something must be moved over several meters.

13.00 19C/66F upstairs. The burning pain in my shoulders moved down to my upper arms for a while. I can't put up with this. What a shame I took today's tablet. This will just extend the side effects for another day! It hurts like hell! As bad as if somebody had thumped me hard and repeatedly across the shoulders.

14.00 8C/46F. 66F upstairs. Using the  basket, it took me half an hour to move and stack slightly over half the trailer full. The average size of the logs was larger in diameter than from the previous supplier.

Which means splitting the larger examples. Or putting them on when the stove already has a red hot bed. Physically lifting the larger logs to insert into the stove may set the limit on size.

I checked the moisture content. To find they varied between 19% & 25%. The earlier batch averaged 15-19% today. Some sunshine would do wonders. To bring down the dampness. Storing logs indoors to sit beside the stove, speeds up drying. The recent, fast turnover when it was cold, prevented long term, warm storage indoors. Milder weather places much lower demands on the stove.

16.00 8C/47F outside. It is pouring down. 20C/68F upstairs! I just went out to capture the logs in the greenhouse. Using the phone camera in very dim conditions. No flash. Not too bad. The kitchen is now up to 12C/54F. The freezer has plunged to -20C.

The steamed up greenhouse before adding more firewood. Still lots to tidy up in there too. The former hedges and towering conifers have all been chopped. A prostrate yew sprawls untidily in front. The greenhouse was invisible behind foliage for years.

I have to contact PostNord, the Danish postal service, about a parcel I returned to a dealer. Their telephone line are only open from 10am-2pm. I have spent many wasted hours listening to their jingles as I wait in the half hour queue to be answered.

My new phone gave me the opportunity to chat with them via their app. The problem? A 90 minute waiting time to be served. They tell me to keep the app open so I don't lose my place in the queue. Still 249 people in front of me and 66 minutes to go. Their service closes at 6pm. Which means I may not be answered for three quarters of an hour after their closing time. Or perhaps it just means they close the queue? How could I possibly know if they don't tell me? [Or us.] 5.50 now. The excitement and anticipation in the air is palpable. 😁

Update: 6.00 passed without my being told to go home for the night. Things are speeding up slightly. I may be served just after 6.30pm. Problem solved.

Another WhatsApp chat with my sister in England.

21.20 7C/45F outside. Dinner was boiled potatoes with mushrooms and two fried eggs. No picture. I forgot to take one. 13C/55F in the kitchen.

19 Dec 2022

19.12.2022 Remaining cold.

 ~~

Monday 19th 0C/32F. Overcast. Up at 5.30. Cold indoors again. Upstairs 14C/57F, lounge 12C/53F, kitchen 8C/47F, bathroom 5C/41F. The freezer had risen to -6C again.

7.00 I ate my breakfast while watching the stove. Just to be sure it was well alight. I have run out of kindling. Which raises the spectre of buying more fireproof kindling from my usual source. The last lot wouldn't burn unless tossed onto a roaring fire. The sticks are split from old pallets. Presumably from fire-proofed pallets judging from the last couple of sacks.

I have been buying kindling from the sheltered workshop for years. It was even more ironic and depressing that their prices had risen. Perhaps to match their inability to provide the very quality one needs in kindling. The ease with which it SHOULD catch fire readily.

I also need more logs. Preferably from a non-racist source. I have been advised of another supplier. Getting there, in icy conditions, with the trailer, is another matter. I can leave it for a couple of days for the promised weather improvement. Hopefully they will not be closed early for Christmas. I have just found an unopened bag of wood briquettes in the shed from last year.

The national icy roads warning suggests I avoid an early shopping trip.  Temperatures are rising steadily. The promised cold rain will be falling on hard frozen ground and roads.

8.00 It is hardly light enough to see the trees against the northern sky yet. The lounge and upstairs have risen only 1º F in an hour of the stove going well.

8.30 After yesterday's burst mode, phone camera fiasco I discovered an option to delete burst images. It throws up a multi-frame symbol when in the Gallery mode. Tap on Delete and it offers to delete the burst images. Very useful!

9.00  Rain on the southerly widows. The wind is picking up as it gets lighter. The greenhouse roof is covered in thick ice.

11.30 +1C/34F. The ice has melted on the greenhouse roof. The hard packed snow and ice on the "patio" has turned to slush. The warning is not to go out in the car if it is not vital. I shall heed that warning despite needing supplies. 15C/60F upstairs. Lounge 14C/57F. I have moved the oil-filled radiator over to beside the new fridge position. Every little helps.

13.20 35F outside with rain. Very dark indoors. Lunch over. Wrong rolls and no banana and yogurt. The larder of daily items is now bare!

Meanwhile, the lounge has reached 15C/60F. 17C/62F upstairs. I have been tidying the little things and books in the front dormer window. It made me miserable putting the things my wife handled into a clear tub. Until I decide what I'll keep. The books on the shelves I had long forgotten I had.

I'll start on the chest of drawers below next. It has been hidden under a maroon curtain for years. Whoops! I'd forgotten that I had cleared the drawers and taken her clothing to the charity shops. Not even any woodworm in the backboard. The chest of drawers can stay until I decide on its fate. Unfortunately the oak tallboy is far too tall to go in the dormer. It would have looked fine just there.

15.20 Went shopping in drizzle. Still no organic bananas.  Had to buy some different organic Arabic coffee.

17.00 +2C/36FJust had milky coffee and a roll. The new coffee is fine. Amongst the piles of books I have just found a big fat one called Kelly's Directory from 1987. I shan't need newspapers to light the stove ever again. The lounge is now at 15C/60F after having the stove on all day. Upstairs a tropical 16C/61F.  I might get daring and take my fleece hat off in a moment. 😅

18.30 +3C/37F. The shorter logs are all gone. So it's back to the normal 30cm length. The stack is shrinking.

The poor old fridge is very confused. After its move and gaining a radiator for a near neighbour. The freezer section is down to -26C now! I had better use up what is left in there. So it's salmon pasty, peas and chips tonight. 😋 That just leaves 5 fish fingers and one more cup of peas to worry about.

I wonder if I could cope with having the fridge under the stairs?  It would only be while temperatures are too low in the kitchen. It can go back out again. Once the kitchen remains safely above 10C. In fact anywhere in the lounge would do. As long as it was reasonably accessible.

20.00 4C/38.5F! The kitchen has reached 10C/50F and the freezer is now at -20C. 17C/63F upstairs after feeding short fat logs to the stove all day. We are promised +6C tomorrow! Perhaps even +7C/45F. 😎

18 Dec 2022

18.12.2022 Whoooooops!!!!!!!!!!

 ~~

 Sunday 18th -1C/30F. Up at 6am. Lower back hurting. Upstairs 13C/55F, lounge 11C/52F, kitchen 10C/50F, bathroom 7C/45. Freezer -5C/23F.

Token winter scene. Not my house!

Phone image [resized.]

7am Lit the stove. There are green flames coming from the firewood. Commercial split beech logs. Green is copper. Why would there be copper in firewood?

Had a long and useful chat on WhatsApp with my British friend. He continues to update my smartphone and computer use. His familiarity with tech is immensely helpful. It is highly unlikely I would stumble across many of his invaluable upgrades.

10.30 Back from a walk to the lanes. I was much too warm in my poshest [ex-charity shop] down jacket. The roads were clear but the verges remain deep in snow. The first bird I saw was probably a harrier.

I am now using my new phone for photography instead of the Lumix TZ7. Again, there is  steep leaning curve. Guess who took a load of burst shots of the same scene? Best of three? The phone does burst exposures by default. A simple tap is all that is required. Deliberate [camera style] presses easily lead to a dozen images! Whoops!!!!

The hosts of yesterday's neighbourhood party came around with their lovely little dogs. I couldn't offer them coffee because the Coop has run out their own coffee! I was in the middle of trimming my beard when the dogs came dashing along the drive in veiled but still blinding sunshine. I'm afraid I was beginning to look like Father Xmas. Which put me at severe risk of being accosted by young ladies demanding a pony for Xmas! Or elderly men demanding a PS7.5 with menaces. Or whatever.

My progress in accustoming myself to being a mobile phone [ab]user is gathering pace. I am going to ask [the real] Santa for one of those special pens with a rubber pointy bit [technical term] on one end. For even faster one finger typing but without so many typos! 75-years-old is probably pushing it a bit, for developing tools, but needs must.

I have just seen my blog on a phone for the first time. I even managed to bookmark it. It can be shrunk and squashed even in landscape mode. Which is useful in avoiding a microscope to read the text. Hmm. I still think I prefer my 28" PC monitor.

The freezer in the fridge has sunk from yesterday's high of -5C to a more comfortable -18C. I feared for the contents as temperatures soared in the ice box. My ]supposedly] frozen bread was almost soft last night. I was contemplating having to eat half a kilo of oven ready chips and 10 fish fingers at one sitting. And I kid you not! 😋

Dinner was chips, peas and only 5 fish fingers.

I just caught up with two day's worth of washing up. I cut my little finger on a tin. So I had to search for the only rubber gloves I could get over my large hands. The gloves were so tight I may never walk quite the same way again.

The recidivist fridge is going to be moved into the corner opposite the preparation area. It should be slightly warmer there. The door to the front hall will obscure it when it is wide open in the summer. Not a major problem and there is plenty of clearance and new electrical sockets installed.

The fridge could easily be moved back to where it was behind the door to the rear entrance hall. When want to leave all the internal doors open. Moving the fridge will free up the wider area at the far end of the kitchen. Where there is an alcove stealing space from the bathroom.

Just had a first WhatsApp chat to catch up with my eldest sister in the UK. They have quite a crowd there for Christmas. We'll chat again tomorrow. It's good to keep in touch.

She and her husband visited me in the summer in their camper van. Which saved me having to find beds for them. When the house was an even worse tip than it is now!

Wide angle image captured by the phone by artificial light. Deformed in PhotoFiltre 7 to [almost] straighten the verticals, rotated clockwise by 1º and then cropped.

I moved the fridge-freezer and the mini-oven to their new position in the corner. The fridge door is so much more convenient opening to the room. Instead of blocking access. I would much prefer the freezer on the bottom. With the fridge at the top. The dresser bottom half is temporary. When complete, it won't fit under the exposed larder shelves above.

The mini-oven is very convenient at this height. Saving ducking down to peer into the darkness within. The light is much better in that corner than at the other end of the room. The old, yellow wallpaper is going to be stripped. Then the internal walls patched up, where needed and painted white. The outside wall [behind the camera] badly need insulation.
