8.03.2023 Keep your head. Keep your e-bike!

 ~~

Wednesday 8th -6C/22F. Clear and bright with a frost. The sun is shining right through the house. The Druids would be happy. Wednesday is museum day. I have the fan heater on in the 7C/44F bathroom to warm it up a little before my shower. It rose to a cosy 10C/50F.

8.20. -4C/28F. Whoops! I left the windows open to get rid of the steam. The temperature in the bathroom dropped to +1C/34F!

The car is white with frost again. The sun doesn't fall on it until later. I must find a better parking spot to catch the early sun in winter.

There was some ice on the millpond at the museum. With frozen features in the exit sluice.

14.15 3C/37F. The sunny day continues. I spent the entire morning shoveling gravel. To repair a muddy and rutted drive in the museum grounds.

I had a phone call to say my new helmet has arrived. The e-bike will be delivered on Friday afternoon. Which is perfect timing.

15.30. Back from town after collecting my new helmet.

The Abus Pedelec 2 with MIPS has a patented slippery lining. This is supposed to reduce the risk of head injury. The helmet has a multi-diode red light at the back. With a flap hiding a helmet cover for wet or cold weather.

Note the choice of the brightest colour available for high visibility. Countless crash test dimmies are still using their mobile phones while driving. So one should not give them any excuse not to see you. The helmet looks brighter in real life. The white background has bleached the colour.

The Large size fits further down over my head. For better protection of the temples. The image has the helmet tipped slightly too far back. None of the other pictures I took were any better. When leaning forwards, on the bike, the helmet will naturally assume the correct angle. Mr Grumpy rides again! 😏

My e-bike expert sister has made recommendations about e-bike security. I was putting off an actual lock purchase until I had the bike. Just to ensure new locks would actually fit. She also recommended Diamond rated locks with added chains. There aren't too many of these in the bike shops yet. So I obviously have some further searching to do. Perhaps even purchase online.

Danish bike racks tend not to allow immobility without additional locks. They only allow a strip of the front tyre to fit into the rack. Fatter tyres may not even fit at all. Which would mean finding street furniture to attach the bike securely.

The image above shows my trike with a heavy ABUS U-lock securing the front wheel to the frame. The long wheelbase carrier bike has a small U-lock securing the front wheel to the rack. This would demand that the wheel has no quick release mechanism. Which would be a gift to cycle thieves with transport. Steel the bike and leave the front wheel behind. A specialist front wheel with disk brake. Like that shown. Would make a bike thief think twice about leaving it behind.

Dinner was chicken and mushrooms with pasta and tinned tomatoes.
