6.11.2022 Stove feeding practice.

 ~~

Sunday 6th 48F. Very heavy overcast and windy. Gusting to 16m/s = 36mph. Raindrops on the windows. Several days with rain and wind lined up as lows cross. Up at 6.30. My back is hurting. 62F upstairs. 60F downstairs.

9.00 Just returned from my walk. Down to the village in the shelter of the roadside hedges. Along the grassy path past the marsh pond. Where a flock of ducks flew across the pond and settled again. Just as they always do. Half a dozen cormorants took off, did a circle and returned as I moved quickly on. To avoid disturbing them unnecessarily.

I soon reached the main portal to the forest and then climbed up to the summit. Following the edge of the beech woods. Then finally taking the direct route back down towards home. The wind was roaring in my ears, or around my hood, for most of the way. Though it didn't feel particularly cold.

12.30 50F. It feels cold indoors. 61F up & 57F downstairs. Lit the stove. The kindling I just bought is at 20% moisture content. It had been stored outside but well protected from rain. The beech firewood is already losing moisture in the greenhouse.

14.00 50F/10C outside. 62F up & 60F down after three logs. Front hall doors to the kitchen open. The doors to the entrance hall and bathroom are closed. There is a cold draught coming around the greenhouse doors. Probably the draw from the stove.

I will have to add a thin board to the inside of the upper door frame. To get more depth for the new, draughtproofing strip. The overlap between the top of the door and the frame is minimal, yet completely original. Bought secondhand with double-glazed doors two decades ago.

Dinner was mackerel on toast with tomato soup. The stove was fed with three more logs in series.
