You are bidding for a George Longstaff 531 custom built tandem tricycle – a lovely “long barrow”. It has the Longstaff dual wheel drive system and rides really well. If you know about riding tricycles you'll know there is a knack and a lot of fun to be had at corners; hills can be hard on all tandems but on a trike you can always just brake and rest a while, admiring the view.
The
frame size is 22.5” front and 21” rear, being the seat tube
measurement from centre of bottom bracket axle to top of seat tube.
Crankset is crossover triple Stronglight/TA with downtube friction
shifters. Gearing ratios are for touring. Gear changers are
Campagnolo. Braking achieved by a sidepull and cantilevers on the
front wheel, operated by the front levers, and two Primax hub brakes
on the rear wheels operated by the stoker. There is a Blackburn low
rider front pannier rack and a Longstaff custom rear rack. Also
included is a set of racing wheels, should you be that way inclined!
Storage
has not been kind to the paintwork and there are some rust spatters,
particularly on the top tube. There is also a bare metal patch by one
of the bottle cage mountings and some rust marks on the headset.
Otherwise it's in good rolling order; the original spec was high and
that quality shines through on the road. I would like this machine to
be ridden so that's why I'm starting the auction at £300.
