Thursday 1st 51F/10.6C [8.15] Sunshine expected to continue for today. Reaching beyond 20C/68F for the warmest day this year. Light SW to southerly breeze.Up at 7.45 after getting up in the night. Dealing with my wife's cat collection triggered a relapse into reliving the past. I was up from 3.30 to 4.30 and wide awake before that.
A perfect day for a ride. Though it will be a little later than planned. I should be staying at home and cutting the grass. Or hanging the shade nets on the greenhouse. Or all the countless other vital things that need doing. Like moving the waste wood from the observatory to somewhere sensible.
Instead of which I shall aim for a 90km ride to Erritsø charity shop. Passing over the Old Bridge and then turning off the Kolding road. The shop doesn't open until 13.00. So I am having a leisurely morning coffee while I prepare my bread rolls and Thermos for lunch. Fredericia has numerous charity shops within reach. I cold go there first if I am too early for Erritsø.
No cargo trousers today. I won't need them for cold weather today. I'll wear the obscenely expensive Assos shorts and Assos chamois cream.
10.00 Off we go!
16.30 Back from a 111km/68 mile ride to Fredericia. I must have seen a dozen different birds of prey on the way. Several hares too.
I was within a short riding distance of Erritsø Fri Bike Shop when the Bosch motor suddenly stopped working. I had just 50km on the computer since leaving home. Imagine having to ride 50km home without any power? 😱
Error 500. If restarting doesn't fix the problem then seek the help of an authorized Bosch dealer.
It seems the speed sensor on the back wheel had accumulated enough crud to stop it working. The bike mechanic gave it a good clean and all was back to normal. My thanks and praise go to the staff at Erritsø Fri Bike Shop. For discovering and quickly dealing with the problem literally while I hovered. Nice blokes. Experience matters. I had no idea my bike had a sensor. Having looked for it without even spotting the magnet. I must keep the bike cleaner.
Only one display cabinet was tempting after visiting numerous charity shops. It was spoilt by an unforgivable and highly visible, raw chipboard edge. It was not from the same Danish factory as the others I now own. Luckily all the shops were open as normal today despite it being May 1st.
I suffered from saddle discomfort from about 25km. Not friction. Just the pressure on my sit bones. Without any built-in padding on my nether regions. I adjusted the seat height, tilt and tension during one break for coffee. Taking repeated short breaks proved to be the only way to reduce it to manageable levels. The Assos bibs [shorts with braces] have unusually thick and firm padding but it doesn't help enough.
On the way back I enjoyed lunch at the same waterfront spot as last time. Where I was joined by half a dozen younger ladies and politely shifted along the bench to make room. They sounded like colleagues or close friends. As they chatted away to each other in a familiar way.
The iron bridge was opened by the then king. Aboard the Royal Yacht, on May 14th 1935. After ten years of construction. 50,000 people turned out. Presumably they were mostly on bicycles or on foot back then. Hundreds of special guests were aboard the first express train. Which broke the inaugural ribbon as it officially crossed the bridge for the first time.

Dinner was a fry-up of chicken, mushrooms and eggs. With some fresh Sugar Drop cherry tomatoes.
