Thursday 8th 45F/7.2C [7.30] Overcast and chilly. Lots of sunshine expected.
Up at 6.45. I was lying awake in the night. Worrying about the car. When suddenly it was two hours later.
Cooking class this morning. Will the Morris deny me an easy 25km drive? Or will it be the e-bike?
The NOCO Genius 5 battery charger has lived up to its name. I left it on all afternoon and night to do its thing. This morning the green LED was showing. Which was quite a shock. Having drained the battery dead flat by leaving the lights on.
Denmark has a requirement to have headlights showing 24x365 while driving. Most modern cars bought in Denmark will automatically switch them on. And off again. There is a separate toggle switch on the dashboard of my 1960s Morris Minor. I am always forgetting it. Despite having coloured tape wrapped around the steering wheel to remind me.
I disconnected the charger. To find the battery voltage showed over 13.5VDC on the DMM. So I turned the ignition key. The motor spun over quickly and started on the choke. Will it still do so after several hours without the charger being connected? Should I risk it? Or go on the e-bike? I will assume I am biking. So will have to prepare for an earlier getaway, dressed appropriately. If it were sunny and warmer I would be looking forwards to the ride.
8.15 50F/10C. It is brightening at last. I am dressed for the ride. Fully charged battery in the bike. 13.30 Back from cooking class. The GLS van just called and left a pair of flat Giro Latch MTB shoes. Size 46 proved to be far too small. I had tried the 45 and 47 sizes in the shop. The toe box is far too small and narrow.
14.15 I also have a pair of Shimano GR5 waiting at the local parcel pickup office. I am off to collect them now. First I have to check the car battery is holding its charge. 13.13VDC. It started instantly.
The Shimano GR5s proved to be heavier but much more comfortable. Which makes a change. I could never find the right size in Shimano MTB SPD shoes. Preferring the wider fitting of Northwave. A single Shimano weighed 444g for size 46. The Giro weighed 374g in the same size.
I ordered green in both cases and they were near identical at a glance. The Shimano are much better made. Flawless out of the box. They still feel a bit odd. As if there is a crossbar under the toes. I'll keep them on for a while and stay on carpeted floors. I am not sure whether I should order a 47 to be absolutely certain of continuous comfort. I can hardly send them back after using them on the bike. They just feel too tight in the toes. No size 47 at the same dealer. They must be discounting the last of their stock.
Northwave do flat MTB shoes. Bontrager do a green flat shoe at a higher price. Pretty, but no toe bumper. Scott and Fox have flats too. How do I know what size to order? All the bike shops I have tried so far have no stock in a 46.
The Shimano shoes are too tight in the toe. They will have to go back. Interestingly [?] they are 30mm shorter in overall length than my usual trainers. I have now ordered three different flat shoes in size 46 from the same online dealer. Two pairs by Scott in different styles and names. Plus a pair of Hummvee by Endura. It is easier to order and return [at modest cost] than to email. Or ask on the phone about toe size.
